![]() I have a foxtail Palm that has been growing bigger and bigger. Problem is this year it is too big to be dragged into the garage as usual. Any suggestion?
Trying to include a picture. Is it possible to cut off the top or would that kill it? |

![]() You can cut off the fronds, but the top of the trunk where they come out is the growth point for the plant in most palms and they will die if that is cut off.
What about that huge Sabal palm there? does it survive a Dallas winter?

What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more. |

![]() That is actually a California (I suspect rather than Mexican) Fan Palm. So not a Sabal.
I wrap it good and this winter for the first time ever not even the fonds died which normally happens. I had 4 palms there once and unfortunately the two right most ones both died and now I have a Bismarck palm there instead. |

![]() Most palms survive where I am about 5 hours southeast of Dallas. I know in Tyler Tx they wrap them and have some big ones. It's about 3 hours north. I don't know varieties but I have some Washingtons and small sago (not a Palm). We also have huge sabal and huge date palms that I know fruit some years around. One winter about 10
Years back killed fronds on some. They regrew though. Just thought I would share some info of how they do a few hours away.

![]() I cut it at the point where the leaves come out of the top like you would do with a banana plant.A landscaper told me that he has seen them do this at nurserys and they told him they do it all the time so I hope it works for you. Good luck.

![]() Thanks, it is worth a try since that would be the only way to get it into the garage to avoid certain death outside.
Thanks! |
