Overwintering 'Patupi' ?
Howdy all,
Has anyone tried wintering 'Patupi' as a 'dormant' pseudostem? Any other winter options besides keeping them in a sauna? Thanks in advance. Steve H. |

Re: Overwintering 'Patupi' ?
I've gone through the entire crawlspace thread before. Lots of great information. My plan is to do just that, put it on the pile with the others. I've had good luck storing dw. Brazilian, dw. namwah, rajapuri and CA gold. Dw Cavendish types, not so much, so I no longer bother with them. Since patupi is supposed to be particularly cold sensitive I figured I'd see if anyone else has been successful with a dormant p-stem. If people chime in and tell me that patupi rots for them I'd probably just pot up a pup and not bother bringing patupi into the basement. At a couple hundred pounds a pop, no sense dragging in p-stems that'd rot anyway.
When I'm hibernating at 40 below it's comforting to know that I've got tropical bananas waiting to emerge with me come spring. Steve H. SW WI USA. USDA zone 3 |

Re: Overwintering 'Patupi' ?
Hi Steve,
I was waiting to reply because I am certainly no expert here. This plant does ok in a 60-70 degree house in winter time with just sunlight from two windows. You can expect a new leaf every 2 or 3 weeks and you just have to water the plant less than other bananas. My plant is still outside and I've already cut back its water rations. I am hope to keep this one alive indoors all winter. It will certainly be hitting my ceiling so we'll see if it makes it. On a side note, If I was trying for fruit, I have had better luck with Veinte Cohol producing a flower with less time / effort. Good luck! Erik |
