Re: Ornamental with widest leaves
Any dwarf or super dwarf variety plant will work.
All have wide green leaves. My favorite is Truly Tiny. |

Re: Ornamental with widest leaves
how about Ensete maurelli? Not exactly a musa, nor a dwarf, but for a year or two can be spectacular, then chop it down and go for the pups and start all over again:-)

Re: Ornamental with widest leaves
That sounds like a great idea. I've never tried to grow an ensete and cut it down to make pups. I have a small ensete glaucum. Maybe I can try with that.

Re: Ornamental with widest leaves
I grew a dwarf Red, Not really an ornamental since the fruit was edible, but had wide leathery leaves. It was the toughest-leaved banana I had ever grown. Lots of red on trunk/pups/fruit.

Re: Ornamental with widest leaves
Sounds like dwarf red and Truly Tiny are the popular choices. What's the best place to mail order these from?

Re: Ornamental with widest leaves
Quote:
With leaves Dwarf red is 5x taller than a Truly Tiny Dwarf is misleading in bananas, dwarf is still big and tall if space is an issue. You want any Super Dwarf variety If you want foiliage any super dwarf plant will work for you. A Super Dwarf Cavendish/ Little Prince /Truly Tiny type plant will work well. The foiliage of all the plants are similar. There are a few vendors on the forum who sell these plants. Big box stores have them also . |

Re: Ornamental with widest leaves
Wal Mart last week started carrying them in the mid-atlantic (super dwarf cavendish) - But it is so dwarf that I think it loses much of its "banana" appeal
