Oriole bird nest under banana leaf

The other day I saw an Oriole bird hanging upside down on one of my banana leaves. I thought it was trying to find some bugs. But to my surprise I found this really cool nest build on the bottom side of one of the leaves and a second half finished nest.

Very cool,thats great to have around!!! Keep us updated on them,it should be fun to watch for you and interesting to see what the birds do once that leaf gets shed by the plant!

As far as I know the incubation time of the eggs is only 14 days and the leaves on my plants usually stay on the plant until frost kills them. Will keep you posted.

P.S. Where do you live in SD that you get frost that kills banana leaves?

Haha, yes it is a genius construction.

I am near the coast and USD is up the hill, but have a Canyon right behind the house that sucks the ice cold air in during the winter. Usually frost hits only for a couple hrs during the early morning hrs, but enough to kill the banana plant leaves so I have to protect the plants as good as possible with frost cloth....

Ah yes, the canyons. Used to live in Rancho Santa Margarita (south OC) so I know all about the cold, canyon air. What a beautiful area... wish I was back in SoCal. We'll have 95-100 degree days/70-75degree nights from now till the end on September here in the Dallas area... I'm so jealous!

I used to live in RSM too pniksch. I loved living there, it was such a nice city.

Update:
I thought that the parents had abandoned the nest, because I had not seen them around the nest for a while. But for about a week now they are extremely busy feeding the babies. Both parents are feeding them continuously and it is fun to watch the little noise makers (there are at least two babies in the nest).

I am trying, especially because the Dad is so beautiful. But they are not coming near the nest if I am around.
