Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
Congrats looks like a nice healthy looking bunch. How did your bananas fare with all the wind we hand last week?
|
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
Thanks! This bunch has the fewest bananas I've had, but the largest for sure. Very heavy bunch. That's why I was so happy the plant bowed down and handed them to me. :2748:
My poor plants are really beat up! Between the wind and the cold nights, I'll be lucky to have many left by the end of winter. :( How has the weather been down your way? |
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
So this is where left coasters go to complain about the weather, huh? The last time I heard the like I was with a bunch of farmers predicting a bad harvest ;^0.
Florida has it's problems, too- there were tornadoes in my neighborhood Christmas weekend. I had some wind damage to trees and my temporary greenhouse, but really just some snapped firning strips and feathered leaves. Why do I feel like the people who spend their time on the "Cold Hardy 'Nanner" list are laughing at us? Paul |
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
I feel your pain Anna, I lost two large Apples, one had an immature bunch with 144 fingers on it. The rest of the Apple matt got really beat to heck too and has very few leaves remaining. The reds are yellowed with feathered leaves. On the bright side my Ae-Ae didn't seem to mind the wind or the cold!

Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
LOL Paul! Yes, I'll bet those in the true cold country are shaking their heads in disbelief. :)
Oh, Mitchel, so sorry about the Apples! Losing that fruit really has to hurt! I'm hoping my IC's hang in there. I have another Orinoco that just flagged, and it's leaning over toward the neighbors. I'm concerned I'll have to cut it down if these winds don't calm down. :( |
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
I HATE WIND I HATE WIND I HATE WIND!!!
I had to cut one Orinoco bunch down... the wind had it so beat up and ready to fall down, and the stakes I put in to hold it fell over 2x, and it was starting to pull the whole clump over with it... This wind is so bad even the ensete leaves are all thrashed and broken and ugly,.... |
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
What the heck is going on with the weather down here. In the 33 years of my life here in SoCal, i have never seen so much wind!!!! I expect this kind of wind in October and maybe in November. We may get one day or two out of a week with no wind. My bananas are all doing fine, but ive had to cut back on most of my leaves. My ensete leaves are all shot, but My P-stems are nice, green, and fat. Its a good thing that i planted my nanas in the best wind protected spots in my yard that i have. Or the way the wind is blowing here it would be "TIMBER" .... yeah that bad.:0493:
The only good thing is that next week, the temps should get back to the 70's and maybe some 80's to. |
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
I hope so.... this bites!

Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
Must be global warming. For us its global wind warning.:kiteflyingnanergif:

Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
Call me crazy, but I just came in from mowing the lawns. It wasn't easy, but the upside is that there was no need to clean up the clippings off of the sidewalk! One 80 MPH gust, and it all blew away. :2791: :0490: :2791:
So sorry about your Orinoco, doubravsky! Are the bananas mature enough to eat I hope? My friend works at the CAC downtown on the 14th floor. She called and said the building was swaying like it does after a quake. |
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
No.... I tossed 'em. I have one other fruiting 'nana, not sure of the variety, but it is still standing up straight, so I'm hoping it'll make it.

Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
Yup this is some crazy weather alright. My bananas are getting hammered by this wind.
|
Re: Orinoco's insist on being harvested!
We lost power a few minutes ago for awhile. I just don't know if I should blanket my plants or not tonight...
Wishing all wind blown plants strong roots and P-stems! :witchnaner: :witchnaner: :witchnaner: :witchnaner: :witchnaner: |
