Oh No! My Viente Cohol is going to flower!

I was hoping that it would hold off until I got it home! Trying to transport that thing in my van with a flower bud is going to be tricky, but I'll make sure that it is locked into place before I take it home.

I haven't really been hitting it with much fertilizer, but it has been getting some along with the rest of my bananas in the greenhouse at school. I was really hoping that it would hold off for about another month at least, so it would have time to grow some more leaves and I could hit it with some extra Potassium. Oh well...guess I should be happy...and I am!

Congrats, Frank. Great work!

Well, the pstem on my V. cohol rotted over the winter in the garage. It looked fine until warmer weather came and then turned brown. This one is quite sensitive to cold, unfortunately. :( I hope it sends up some pups.

Congrats, Frank! A flower in March is much better than October! ;)

Maybe it would be worth renting an elcosed U-haul trailer so you can just leave it upright and move it that way. If you did that, you could probably hold off for a bit. How tall is it?

Thanks for posting,

Harvey

Re: Oh No! My Viente Cohol is going to flower!

I should have been clearer on that, I didn't have a VC bloom last October but did have an unknown bloom in November (the leafless plant is still there with the bud and I'm going to just leave it to see what happens after trimming off the dead sheaths). I hope to get a VC pretty soon.

Brent, in case you missed my question, how tall is the pseudostem on your VC?

Re: Oh No! My Viente Cohol is going to flower!

Oh, I do not have a VC yet. I'm supposed to get one from another member here later this year if his does well. I was just messing with BigDog in my post. I was simply trying to say at least you have a VC and it is about to flower at that. Pay no attention to me!

Sorry, Brent/Frank. Your user names both start with "B" and I was thinking Frank was replying to me when it was Brent commenting to Frank.

Going back to work on taxes where I belong! :P

You guys are funny> Ha-ha......
My VC is still an infant but just transplanted it at my pergola plat. I expect it to be 5 feet tall by the end of summer.

I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing (pictures!) how this plant does for everyone this year. Hopefully I will have one by mid-summer and maybe get it to fruit next year. All of you lucky enough to have one now, please keep us posted.

Thanks for posting,

I have so many plants at the greenhouse, it might actually be worth it to rent a Uhaul!

I just measured it, and it is just over four feet of actual pseudostem.

Thanks, Austin. Sorry to hear about yours. This happened to Randy also! At least we are learning more about its needs. I'm sure yours will come back, if the corm is still solid.

I'm sure Jon in San Diego has had one or more flower. Hasn't he had every cultivar ever available in the US at one time or another? LOL! I wish I had that climate, because I would too.

I've had the plant for about a year, and if I told you anything else about it, I would have to kill you. :2723: :ha:

Here is another (crappy) cell phone picture of it today. It's in the middle of the picture, with a couple of one-gallon Monkey Puzzle Tree seedlings in it and a nice, fat pup (!).

Frank, your plant is flowering at a short height. Mine grew taller than that last year and didn't flower.

bigdog 03-27-2009 12:02 PM

Re: Oh No! My Viente Cohol is going to flower!

It could be blooming at this height for a couple of reaons:

1. It's in a pot

2. Stress. I dug it up and barerooted it in the greenhouse for several weeks before I finally potted it up.

It has 7 full-sized leaves plus the flag leaf, so I don't really anticipate a huge bunch. I'll keep you posted!

I thought Viente Cohol is suppose to flower and fruit small and early. I have been wanting to get one but they are always out of stock at going bananas.

Just an update here. I took these a couple of days ago. Today, there are four hands showing so far, with ten fingers/hand (about).
