Looks great. Can't believe it is so happy in a small pot, a winner for greenhouse growing!

Beautiful! Keep us posted on progress, like length of time from bud to flower to little fruit, to pickable fruit, etc.

That's a good point. Keep in mind that it was grown in the ground all last summer, then unceremoniously ripped out of the ground and brought to the greenhouse. So it hasn't lived its life in this pot. But I was surprised by the timing of the flower! And a bit bummed, since now it will be difficult to bring it home (if it ever warms up around here). Oh, and "small" is relative! That pot is about a 15 gallon pot. It wasn't potted up into it with the idea of having it flower in it; all I wanted to do was get a few leaves going so it had a good start this spring. It sat in a trash bag for about a month before I potted it up!

I am especially interested in this, as I live in a short season area, and I was the person who noticed this somewhere else, and was the first to post it here. The original article is a little difficult to find, as the poster, on the other site, spelled the name wrong, but here is the link:
Veinte Cohol

You know, you got me wondering if I spelled it wrong...I've seen it both ways, and "veinte" seems more logical since that is the spelling of the Spanish word for "20." I see it spelled "Viente" more times on the internet though. I'll see if I can do some digging...

I will surely keep everyone posted. I attended the SPS meeting in Savannah when Dr. Wallace first started the hubbub over this cultivar. He should be introducing a few new hybrids this year too, if memory serves.

Veinte is correct, it's a Spanish word. Gabe and Beth (As I recall) have commented on this. Perhaps Chong did too. My memory is not....something.

That's what I would think too, but if you do a Google Scholar search, "Viente Cohol" turns up more hits than "Veinte Cohol." I found the original article in Southeastern Palms, Winter 2007 issue, and Dr. Wallace has it spelled "Veinte Cohol" every time except the very last one, where he spells it "Viente Cohol."

Sorry, someone, when I posted originally, said I was spelling it long, so I corrected it. I'm Norwegian descent, and the last time I took Spanish was in high school. In college, as a chemistry major, I had to take German.

Scot's right....and it's pronounced "Bent-A".

And then however you say the second 'word', I have no idea!

For the record, here is a page off the literature, "Banana Names and Synonyms in Southeast Asia". Veinte = twenty; Cohol = snail, ergo: Veinte Cohol = twenty snails.

Snail has two translation in Tagalog. One is "kuhol" and the other is "susû". Kuhol is used more is used more in written word because, "susu", without the circumflex(^) above the second "u" means "breast". Kuhol may have been derived from the Spanish "caracol", which means snail. Just like other Spanish words, e.g., guayaba is bayabas in Tagalog(Ta) - guava in English (En); guanabana(Sp) = guyabano(Ta) - soursop (En), veinte(Sp) = beynte(Ta) - twenty (En), etc.
