![]() I’ve yet to come across any poster on this site that actually has only one banana in their collection (unless the other 30 died in some sort of freak accident). I know some of the posters do this for a living. Others simply appear to be obsessed. I’m moving closer to obsession end of the spectrum. The only thing stopping me is climate and a lack of windows on the south side of my house.
I’m sure you people didn’t end up this way overnight. I’ve shown addictive behavior since I was a kid. At one time I had nine aquariums in my parents’ basement. I had one 125 gal tank, one 70 gal, two 29 gals, four 10 gals and one 55 gal. The funny thing about the 55 gal was one of my parents’ friends gave me a 50 gal. I had to go out and buy a stand for it. Turned out the tank had a leak. Now I have a stand with no tank. Guess I have to go out and buy a new tank. No need to get a 50….may as well get a 55 gal since it fits the stand. LOL. If I had known about bananas back then, I would be in serious trouble right now. So what was your obsession growing up? Share the story of how you ended up this way. Feel free to start your post with “Hi my name is _____ and I am and addict” or “forgive me father for I am an addict. It’s been _____ since my last confession”. |

![]() Funny you mention your aquariums. I am down to one reptile tank now.
Which I am trying to get rid off. At one point I had a small reptile room with a number of tanks... Anyone looking for a crested gecko in or around St. Louis? (Free) Now just nanners for me. It all started when I lived in Arizona. We had some orange trees in the backyard. I did some research and came across a company selling fruit trees/plants and spotted my first banana plant, got hooked as soon as I saw one. =] Moved back to St. Louis and my mother purchased a Zebrina for me. The next day I went out and bought a Dwarf Cavendish. One day later I found this site. I kept those two plants in dirt over winter and planted out in the spring (2010) Along with a couple dozen more plants I picked up on C-List along with some TC's from jimmmy and plants from other forum members here. This year I had 3 plants flower (none of which will be harvested). There is no turning back now... Yes I as most members here am addicted to bananas. I am getting ready to go dumpster diving soon. (All big and most other places throw out all non hardy plants =]) I would say turn back now...but since you started this thread I know it is already to late for you. Happy Growing!

![]() Justin, you overlook that you are the problem. You don't have too many bananas, you are just resisting the purchase of a house that is big enough, or a house that is in the right location. Both of these solutions are doable.

![]() Ive always loved tropical plants! When I went to florida when I was younger, the first thing I would look for is palm trees. One or 2 palm trees in my own backyard sufficed then, but one day I was bored and I tried to figure out if there were any palm trees that would survive my climate. Well when I found out that there were, I looked you lots and lots of info about them. It was about 4 years ago that I started to grow really tropical plants, but its been only the last 2 years that I have grown a really large amount of them and unusual types. Ive also had palm trees in the ground for 2 years. Before this summer I only had 3 banana plants since others have died along the way, but as of right now I have 11! I have....
2 Musa basjoo 2 Little prince (each have lots of pups!) A dwarf cavendish A super dwarf cavendish An ice cream banana A thai black banana A musa velutina A Musa saba An Ensete Tandarra Red So thats 8 new banana plants in about 3 or 4 months! And those definitely arent the only plants I have bought! Last year I had a lot of plants and this year I have twice as many, maybe more! Next year I plan on putting a lot of the bananas and many other tropicals in the ground for the summer. Every year the collection gets bigger. It started with a quick search online, but the love for tropicals was always there!

![]() Justin, if you ain't moving, then adding on is your only option. I confess, I haven't moved in 25 years, and both kids grew up only knowing this one house. We did add on quite a bit, but the bananas are all outside, even so. I actually admire people spending the time and effort to grow a banana where it shouldn't ought to be. I was introduced to this insanity years ago when I saw a pix of a guy in St Louis with about 20+ banana pseudostems laid out on his lawn (most 8-10 feet tall) after dragging them out of his basement, and getting ready to plant them in the spring. I don't see myself being that devoted.

![]() My name is Patty & I'm a nanaholic, citruholic & palmaholic --& any plantaholic.
I, like Palmtree, love the tropical look. I started with local flowers, then palm trees - citrus- bananas- dragon fruit - & many others. I had a 10 gal aqaurium that someone gave me so I bought 5 small angel fish & they started breeding...hence my addiction to breeding & tropical fish. I sold them to local pet shops & aquariums. Jarred has a nother forum on tropical fish but I never went there YET cuz I've been busy & afraid I'll get hooked again. Got rid of fish around 10 yrs ago. Been into my plants & home remodeling.
