Is This Normal Or Do I Have A New Super Banana?

I have two Dwarf Cavendish plants in the same soil that get just about the same amount of light every day. They're both doing well but one of them is especially strong. Within a few weeks of being planted in its current location it sent up 3 pups and now grows and opens a new leaf every other day. The other banana has only one pup and develops new leaves at a slower rate. Is this within normal variation or have I stumbled upon an especially vigorous strain?

That does sound interesting. But most of us will tell you here that Bananas are just fickle plants and will suprise from time to time. I can testify to that.

This thing is crazy. As soon as one new leaf has unfurled you can see the next emerging. It's not very tall right now, only 18 inches of p-stem, but it is twice as tall as the other Dwarf Cavendish and they both started out at only 5 inches or so a few months ago. Every new leaf on the super banana is also noticeably larger than the last. It easily gets three leaves a week, sometimes four!

It is normal for nanners to grow twelve+ inches a day under the right conditions. Depending on how long the leaves are, sounds about right to me. But four leaves in one week, that's incredible.

Wow, very impressive. Bananas are certainly an intriguing plant.

I'll try to remember to take some pics tomorrow. A new leaf just unfurled today and the next one is already peeking out.

its normal for some plants to grow it just depends on genetics soil light available food and also the other plant may be under attack by Bactria or fungi you are not aware of as yet

These were both from water pups. They were dug over a year ago but neglected until the last few months.

The newest leaf on this particular banana is still forming, it looks like I won't get three leaves this week. It may possibly be related to environmental factors. It hasn't rained at all this week and it was raining nearly every day when the banana was growing the fastest.

The only way to tell for sure is to grow it side by side with a normal plant in different conditions over the course of a few years. If its stable and consistent, its a sport, if its jsut this one time in this one condition, then its not.

The rains have returned but unfortunately it looks like my banana is not as super as it was. Now I'm only getting two leaves a week. :(
