Dear Clueless,
I am not sure, but maybe a little Gibberelic acid would help. Experts???? |

Sounds similar to mine. About 3ft tall and a ton of pups. Lots of leaves but theirs not much height gain from each new leaf. I don't remember it being like this last year. It must have a good 10 leaves for its probably 2ft p-stem.

I've been using Miracle grow fert. I mixed 2/3 tomato,1/3 general blends and feed once a week. All the other Bananas love it and are getting big. The Basjoo's are giving up a leaf a week and are getting fatter but the height is only grown about 2 inches since the middle of may.
and now has 3 pups |

Yeah I also fertilized mine. My other bananas are growing fine. This is getting rather weird. seams my basjoo wants to be a dwarf.

Well this is my first year so I don't have anything to compare them too,but at least I haven't killed any of them yet. So far so good I guess. Are yours in the ground or in pots. I have 2 in pots and 1 in the ground. The one in the ground is a lil bit bigger but not much. They were all bought within a week of each other.

i use the expert gardner water soluable fert once a week, they get about a half gallon a week. when i got their beds ready i used potting mix, organic compost with cow poop. all of the nanas are doing great, their just not getting taller. i have at least one new leaf a week on all of my nanas. all of my basjoos are in the ground. i have pups but no height to them. my tallest is 4 and 1/2 ft tall.

Sam, how much mulch do you have on the basjoo. Everything I read is that they are very fast growing.

I wonder if acidity or alkalinity can cause this sort of behavior? Anyone?

I know I've seen pictures on here of other people's basjoos that are tall and beautiful. Mine (that I got from Stokes Tropicals) hasn't been much taller than 5 feet or so for the nearly 10 years I've had it. It has pupped many plants and seems generally healthy, but is just not a tall cultivar. It is also the least attractive of all varieties I have. I've heard at least one other person say that their basjoo seemed to be a dwarf also.
I believe that it may be the cultivar that you have. |

Well, 3-4" of mulch doesn't sound to deep. I thought it may have been to deep and causing root cooling.
Thus stunting growth. Maybe, it is just a cultivor of.

I have a basjoo that is maybe 2ft tall and has 3 pups. gains leaves but no height. hoping maybe the pups will do something as they are almost as tall as the mother. my other basjoo has 14 leaves and is only 2-2 1/2 ft tall also. the p-stem is about 5" in diameter at the base.
