The Noobs Naners

Hello all,

Just wanted to show off the nice pups that Momoese (Mitchel) donated to my budding banana collection, along with two others that I bought pre-Bananas.org.

Here's the Dwarf Brazilian he gave me:

...and the Namwah, currently in the bullpen until I figure out where to put it:

My Raja Puri I bought about a year and a half ago:

And lastly, my Blue Java...though I was admittedly a little nervous about posting this one given the Ice Cream/Not Ice Cream threads I've seen here. In any event, let me know if it doesn't appear to be one.

Thanks,
Craig

Me neither but I was afraid to say anything. Emperor has no clothes syndrome.

Man, I'm such a tool. It looks like this was a result of my decision to make the photo album private. I thought it was okay since my post preview looked okay. Let me know if my pics didn't load. Sorry about that!

Awesome! You really should have snagged a Pisang Klotek from Mitchel as well. I hear they're excellent.

Also, your Raja Puri does not look like a Raja Puri. But to me your Ice Cream is certainly not a Namwah.

Thanks Andreas...interesting about my "Raja Puri". I'll try to post more pics of that one to get some sort of positive ID on it. I got it from Armstrong about a year ago and assumed the tag was correct.

You have to be really careful. My Raja Puri was originally labeled "Ice Cream." Mine is a bit on the short side (5'6"-ish of p-stem at last bloom height), but here are a few pics of it.

Hopefully this helps. :)

Yellowish blotchy p-stem, looks like real Ice Cream to me. Agree on the PK recommendation. As it sounds like virtually a Mysore without BSV, one of the more beautiful and tasty bananas.

In Northern CA at the moment and was jealous to find Goldfinger at CVS. Can't find them anywhere in Hawaii. If you can score one of those too, worth trying.

If you drop by the Forge Garden at Santa Clara University you'd probably see my Ice Cream that I planted this year taking off. :)

Thanks for the ID/confirmation on the Blue Java, Rob. I might have to check out my local CVS now...not that I have any space to put anything right now.

Andreas, thanks for posting the pics. My "Raja Puri" is probably at about 6' of pseudostem right now.

Here's more pics of my potentially mislabeled Raja Puri (pardon the weeds):

Re: The Noobs Naners

It looked larger than 6' from the original picture, and that's where my suspicions originally arose. But 6' does actually sound about right. The petioles on yours are similar to mine. It appears that your plant is just a lot more slender than mine for some reason; mine tends to be stout and stays short. It definitely looks like a Raja Puri, growth habit aside.

What is this mention of CVS and bananas? Does your local CVS sell plants?! What the heck, some folks get all the luck.

Andreas, I just took another look at my pics and I can see how the wrong impression was given. It actually sits on a rise next to the neighbor's garage in that pic, and with no ground reference, it appears taller than it actually is. Thanks for taking a closer look for me.

@Lemmysports - don't get too jealous. I can't speak for what Rob is seeing, but my CVSs carry really small plants. It's been a while since I've seen anything at mine, but I do recall seeing a banana plant of some sort ~5 years ago at my local store. I didn't pay it much mind, but it was a very small specimen.

No, it's an odd CVS in Oakland, that was Long's for years before they were bought out and converted. This one store was known for a pretty impressive nursery, so they've maintained a decent sized nursery, most of it outdoors, including the Goldfinger. They did have many large ensetes inside.

So I wouldn't say look for Goldfinger at CVS, but since I saw it there, perhaps the supplier is supplying other nurseries in the state.
