Newest Banana Plant Arrivals - Damaged Ice Cream
Today I received 3 new banana plants. I had ordered a Musa Dwarf Orinoco, Musa Dwarf Namwah and a Musa Ice cream.
The Dwarf Orinoco and Dwarf Namwah made it in one piece, but unfortunately the pseudostem of the Ice cream got damaged during shipping. I really didn't want to cut off the top of the plant, but I don't think there was any other option. It was a shame, because the leaves appeared to be in such a good state. Here is a close up of the damaged pseudostem on the Musa Ice Cream: Here is a picture of all 3 together, after chopping the top of the ice cream off: Left to right: Musa Dwarf Orinoco, Musa Ice Cream, Musa Dwarf Namwah |

Nice! Hopefully they grow well for you. Those seem like very big plants to ship.

Re: Newest Banana Plant Arrivals - Damaged Ice Cream
Yeah I was surprised how big they were when they arrived, I was expecting them to be no bigger than the Dwarf Orinoco was. In the picture I had already repotted the Dwarf Orinoco, it arrived in a really small container that was almost completely squashed during shipping.
The centre of the ice cream's pseudostem has already grown about 2.5 cm (or about an inch) since I cut it yesterday. I was surprised at how quickly it has started to protrude, I can almost watch it as it grows |

Your dog looks like he is waiting for the bananas to pop up.

Re: Newest Banana Plant Arrivals - Damaged Ice Cream
Hi Peter
You got some nice varieties there, will these be grown in a greenhouse and what do you plan to do with them, in the winter months. |

Re: Newest Banana Plant Arrivals - Damaged Ice Cream
I'm going to try and grow them in large containers outside, during summer and them overwinter them indoors. I do have access to a family members greenhouse, so if the British summer doesn't go quite to plan i'll probably move them there. I mostly wanted to get some dwarf fruiting varieties, but then I saw the Ice Cream and just had to order it too.

Re: Newest Banana Plant Arrivals - Damaged Ice Cream
Yeah I was afraid that would be the case. I'll give them a couple of weeks of being outside in the day and inside overnight and see how they cope. What varieties have you managed to grow outside in our climate?

That didn't stop it from putting out a baby! Precocious little thing. Being the shamelessly lazy gardener I am, I'll just put it into this 26 L pot one time instead of something more appropriate so that I won't have to transplant it for a while. I'm sure it'll start growing furiously in no time and fill the container with roots Hope your bananas are handling the British winter well!
