Default Newbie Needs Advice!!

So I saved this guy from a historic home cuz I always wanted to grow my own but now that I appear to have fruit I'm in panic mode! I have no idea what kind of banana this is, I've never trimmed it, but now I'm needing to protect this fruit & have no idea how to treat this buddy. I live in North County San Diego & ANY help with ID, fertilizers, pruning, etc. would be appreciated photos are in my gallery but I can't figure out how to get them in this post. I'm Dumb with computers AND bananas!!

See here.

At this point you are just along for the ride. They will ripen probably in April or May. Do everything you can to keep them warm.

Very nice looking plant. Now you just have to wait for the banana fingers to fill and turn yellow.

If you leave the flower on the plant it can tell you a lot about the kind of plant you are growing. Look at the Rachis. Is it bare or covered with bracts. Look at the bracts do they roll, lift one at a time or fall away from the plant. How tall is the pseudostem? From the pictures it looks like a small or dwarf plant.

Congratulations.

Susan

Ok, so the rachis isn't bare, & the bracts fall away. How does this help me determine what kind it is? Pseudo stem is about 6'. Thank you so much for helping me learn about this beautiful buddy next to my home. I wish I knew more but I believe the plant was in a dark shady spot at the historic house I rescu it from for a few decades. I'd love to taste what it's got!

I have been making a list of bananas with messy and clean rachis. This is one easy way to start the identification of your plant. Once you have somewhere to start you can look at those banana plants. Raja Puri has a messy rachis so if your plant has a clean rachis you have eleminated Raja Puri and several plants. I'm just starting out myself and if I have any wrong on my list please let me know so I can correct it.

Pisang Raja messy rachis
Brazilian clean rachis
Orinoco clean rachis
Goldfinger mostly clean rachis
Dwarf Brazilian messy rachis
Rajapuri messy rachis
Dwarf Giant (enano gigante) clean then messy rachis
Gros Michel mostly clean rachis
Grande Naine messy rachis
