![]() Hey Everyone,
A new variety (species?) has been discovered in India's Andaman Islands: Feast on the sweetest banana, courtesy the Little Andaman Andamans yield a sweet banana with orange pulp - The Hindu Seems interesting! This one has seeds which apparently have medicinal properties. Anil |

![]() Those things are monsters! Eleven meters? How have they not been "discovered" by the world at large yet when they can grow that huge? I'd love to see one in person, and of course taste the fruit. Love the green blossom.
As for the alleged medicinal properties of the seeds, I'm wondering of other banana varieties have those same properties but haven't been discovered, studied or utilized yet. |

![]() The reason these haven't been discovered so far is that parts of the Andaman Islands are pretty remote, with very few people inhabiting it.
There are seed-bearing varieties in the mainland as well (not the 11 mts variety, but another species of wild banana), and they too supposedly have medicinal properties. These actually propagate ONLY through seeds, and not suckers! In the mainland, these are Critically Endangered, because people over-gather fruits & seeds to sell them! Quote:

![]() These have been previously documented in at least two textbooks and one website but only recently has the story come to surface in the media -- hence the article's title "new variety".

![]() Why hasn't someone brought it over here and propagated it yet? It sounds promising, ultra sweet and large bunches. After some time searching online I can confirm there are no seeds for sale anywhere.
