New Siam Ruby

Hey, great news ------ did a trade with a good buddy and neighbor, Katkin, from the Gardenweb, and got a 3 ft Siam Ruby pup dug out of the mama. She got a special variant of my Neoregelia and a musa "cross" pup. The SR has two distinct pups a'budding. Time will tell if I kill this one off like I did the other three. Just in case ---took it to Mackenziemiller to get it potted with the good stuff - topped off with an inch of vermicompost. Ooooh baby!

Siam Ruby is beautiful...I saw a pup for the first time this summer at a garden centre...but I do not know anything about it...is it a species? Hybred? Ensente? MUsa?
How hardy is it? Conditions? It was expensive...30.00 for a 8inch pup...anyone know anything..cheers jack

i did not want to start a new thread to to say whats up with my SR it has not done well for the year iv had it and a month ago it suddenly split in two and out emerged a rather choppy and raged leaf then all of a sudden it put on a growth spurt the likes of which iv not seen producing 6 leafs in about 3 weeks good for here in the heat of the desert the leafs are some what small compared to the previous leafs but all take it i was going to order a new on as this one was so sickly for so long but its in a lot of sun to and finely its gotten the characteristic red or what passes for red in the SR iv seen ones that were beautiful but this ones just drab dark brown red any one got a line on SR that is robust and with the cherry red color let me know

the only thing i can think of is that i was sick of taking care of such an ugly puny plant so i fertilized the hell out of it i think i shocked it in to growing ?

PS has any one noted that SR need higher levels of Calcium?

I hope it does well. If it looks like it it suffering, you might try shading the pot. My SR was unhappy then I discovered how very warm the soil in the pot was. I shaded it (soil, not leaves) and it really perked up. Now that she is in the ground she is doing even better.
