I wonder if it was perhaps based on the Fibonacci sequence, maybe in terms of half steps: 1/2, 1/2, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6.5? So in A it would go (I think):

I recommended that Roy use Fibonacci differences (in hertz) between consecutive notes in the scale used for his instrument. These differences would progress from the first note (frequency value) selected for the scale.
