Default Nendran or Kochchi

Is anyone familiar with the Nendran banana? I have searched the forums but don't find a reference for it. Perhaps it is known commonly by another name? Thanks for any leads.

I'm not familiar with it, but according to the link below, it is a plantain.

Thank you. I've seen many Indian recipes calling for it. Now I can narrow my search.

Nendran means plantain in Malayalam. It could be the normal plantain locally grown in Kerala India. There is different types of nendran, that means different types of Plantain.
green fruit is good for chips. Once it ripe good for steaming.

That's a common mistake made by the general public, here it's done with our False Horn type cultivar 'Maricongo', cultivar 'Nendran' is a French type plantain.

The name ‘Nendran’ is a generic name in Kerala State for the AAB ‘French Plantain’

People call it differently in different parts of the world.
People grow it differently in different parts of the world.
People cook it differently in different parts of the world.

False horn type is new to Kerala ...I heard a farmer call it hornless nenthran or hornless plantain. But chundillakkannan was there long time ago.

It's the same way here, every plantain is called a Maricongo,....

A French type plantain is a mini Maricongo or little plantain.

A Horn type plantain like an African Rhino Horn is a giant Maricongo or giant plantain.

....you just get used to it after awhile.

Here all breakfast cereals are called "corn flake", it doesn't matter if it's Raisin Bran or Shredded Wheat, it's called "corn flake".

....you just get used to it after awhile.

Thank you all. I suspected it was a French type but thanks for the confirmations. I will go with a French plantain. It seems the ones I like for chips are French.
