Need advice quick....

Latest weather predictions are showing a freakish late freeze/snow for me next Monday. Temperatures could be in the mid to upper 20s for a few hours in the early morning hours and not get out of the 30s during the day for a day or two. I have two dwarf cavendishes and eight musa basjoo's in the ground. It has been above 40 at night for the last 2 weeks, and our normal low is 40 this time of the year. Last year we didn't have anymore freezes after April 10th. How can I protect my 10 bananas for this period? After I get through this, I'm sure the chance of a freeze is done with. I do not want to dig them up and stress them again as they are babies.

Ugh, this sucks. It's 65F out right now and was in the 70s yesterday. Can't believe this is happening.

If they are small and only been in the ground for a week or two, I personally, would dig them up and bring them in... If this is not an option, the only thing I can think of is to pile mulch, leaves, whatever organic material you can get your hands on all around the plants and over top of them several inches... Good luck...

I've had success with other plants by making a little box of EPS (aka styrofoam) sheeting (available at Home Despot) around each plant and then filling the insides with mulch, topping off with a final sheet of styro, and wrapping the whole schmoo in burlap. Then I would just pray for the cold snap to end.

This kept my outdoor Hibiscus alive in Edmonton during a -30 C cold snap.

you can take chix wire make a cylinder, put it around your nanas and pile straw and leaves in it. or you can do a teepee kind of thing with a blanket. put a stick in the ground and teepee the nana with that( put some straw and leaves around the base of the tree as high as you can go.) i had mine up under hte eves of the house and tacked blanket up to keep the hard freeze off mine last week. they were under the blanket for 3 days. and they all came out fine.

if they are small enough, turn a garbage can over the tops.
