Namwa over wintering in NC?
I'm coastal zone 8b. What are the chances of Musa Namwa surviving a normal winter here? This thing is 6ft maybe taller and a good 12" plus thick p-stem. Its right up against my brick house and right next to the cement driveway/walkway. Those things would help retain some heat. I planned to mulch deep around it and wrap it really good. First time ever growing this sucker. Hate to loose it,has several pups. Ice Cream is suppose to survive here without a problem. Mine did in a pot from a local guy who claimed he has lots of them and they come right back each year. Wish I could find that guy as mine rotted in that pot from un proper drainage during the spring,so I could see if his looks like my Ice Cream from Richard.

Re: Namwa over wintering in NC?
Plants delight says there survive 8 degree winters. Just found a article Tony Avent wrote. PDL is two hrs north from me and really cold there in the winters with snow and ice. So I should be fine.

It'll do just as well as Ice Cream.

Re: Namwa over wintering in NC?
I assume survive in this case does not include the P-stem . Is that correct? I remember a thread where "Survive" did not include the P-stem.
Winter protection is on my mind as well. From my reading, keeping the P-stem dry too is important as cold protection if you wrap them.

Re: Namwa over wintering in NC?
I don't think the P-stem would survive that low. Must bee root-hardy to 8 degrees, but the stems generally go in the mid to upper teens on most nanners I've read up on.

Re: Namwah over wintering in NC?
A P-stem after 12 hours of freezing is going to have some kinda damage, 24-48 it turns into a big banana ice cube sitting on your corm. When it thaws out its mush. I had a small namwah come back after we got down 13F lows but it was mulched and protected from north and west winds. The real question is: Is growing a (etible banana) corm come spring good enough for you?

Re: Namwa over wintering in NC?
God will bless us with fruit when the plants are ready! Hey if I can have Canna's over winter in zone 4 with mulch then I will have no problem with Namwah. Will just add more mulch and wrap the p-stem well.
