Namwa Or Ice Cream Fruit ?
Hello Gang; I bought These As Ice Cream But I Know they Are Namwah, The Hue On this Bunch Appear To Be Much Lighter Than The Other Namwah Bunch. Thanks Ed Last edited by edzone9 : 11-08-2014 at 09:19 AM. |

Re: Namwa Or Ice Cream Fruit ?
The second (picture) bunch I think looks like Namva. The first (picture) bunch I'm not sure. Have you tried the fruit yet?

Re: Namwa Or Ice Cream Fruit ?
I usually wait until one turns yellow before I cut the whole bunch down. They will split open if you leave them too long.
I have never purchased from Wells-Springs so I'm not sure if you get what your order when you buy from them. I have several plants myself that I'm waiting for them to bloom so I can see if I got what I ordered. |

Re: Namwa Or Ice Cream Fruit ?
If I compare it to my Namwah and Blue Java bunches it probably looks more like my Namwah bunches. The blue color of my Ice Cream bunches varies with light and ripeness of the fruit but all have that silverish coating what I do not see in your photo.
The other clue that makes me think it might be a Pisang Awak/ Namwah type is the purple coloring on the band of the banana pedicel. But this trait also varies with maturity here: it will be there the first few weeks but it is definitely gone by harvest time. You will definitely know by the time they get ripe: Namwah bananas will be yellow ( maybe not that bright than a store bought Cavendish) while the Blue Java just turns to a pale yellow and never looses the silverish coating. Here are some photos. Photos were taken and uploaded with my phone this morning, I do not have any photoshop skills. Sorry for the bad light, but I hope you can see the differences at the various stages. Photo 1 shows my Namwah bunch (first hand appeared July 16 2014) [IMG][/IMG] Photo 2 shows a Blue Java/IceCream bunch (first hand appeared July 20 2014) Photo 3 shows a Namwah bunch (first hand appeared Sept 12 2014) [IMG][/IMG] Photo 4 shows a Blue Java/IceCream bunch (first hand appeared Sept 23 2014) [IMG][/IMG] For color comparison of BJ bunches at different ages Photo 5 shows another Blue Java/IceCream bunch on the left (first hand appeared Oct 1 2014) next to a Pisang Klotek bunch on the right (first hand appeared Aug 1 2014) [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by crazy banana : 11-09-2014 at 06:25 PM. |

Re: Namwa Or Ice Cream Fruit ?
Nice looking nanas - will you be able to harvest with such late blooms?
and, is there a size difference between namwah and BJ? My drawf namwah nanas are smaller than tall namwah - still waiting to be sure my ice cream is the real thing but we expect a freeze on Friday -

Re: Namwa Or Ice Cream Fruit ?
Hopefully it will NOT freeze! A freeze could be avoided if the dew point temperatures are not too low. The cold air mass is mostly hype, it is not very cold relative to average temperatures
