Banana Gallery - IMG_3120

I posted a picture to my gallery, it wouldn't let me attach it in here?

Anyway, what I'm supposed to have here are truly tiny musa banana trees.

They look pretty rough from shipping. The card inside the box said to take the pepper wrap off of them and soak the pots in water for under an hour. I set the pots in about 2" of water for a half hour as I'm afraid to over water these things. They don't look very healthy.

This is my first time trying to grow anything in a pot. I live in northwestern Ohio so these will be inside most of the year. I have the heat turned on in the kitchen where they are sitting now and they're on a towel. Should get a decent amount of light sitting by my sliding patio doors that face the west.

I have an 8" pot ready to put the best looking one into and i'll likely give the other away assuming they make it that long.

I just need some general tips for helping these things out. Anything would be greatly appreciated!

No idea when to transplant one into the larger pot or how exactly to do it.

I would recommend a good quality potting mix with good drainage. Don't overwater during the winter months and keep it in as much sun as you can. If you have a few warmer days, over 65, maybe give it a little outside filtered sunlight but don't burn the leaves with too much sun... Next spring, put it in a bigger pot and gradually adjust it to 5-6 hours of sun outside and watch it grow.
Be patient on here, as many people come here like once a week or so. There are many who live in the north and will have much more detailed info for you. In the meantime, search the site and learn all you can.

Congrats, I agree with sputnic. Give them time and light. The plant roots are probably wrapping around the bottom of the pot so you can upgrade anytime. They will grow slow until they are placed outside.

A grow light will speed up growth, but it may be more practical to wait for spring to arrive and then put them outside if the temps are above 50F.....

I would hold off fertilizer until you see the plant growing at a good rate.

I have had my best luck growing bananas indoors using Tera Cotta pots. The cheap, non glazed, clay pots. I feel that they breath better and help to prevent overwatering. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies everyone, the one plant is doing pretty well. How do you post pictures directly in the thread?

Miracle grow makes a fast draining potting soil for cactus palm and citrus. Would you recommend that?

On the watering, still a little unsure how much is too much. I thought these things really likes water.

Can anyone tell me if these are the ice cream banana plants for sure? I'd really like to know what I have as this is going to live indoors half of it's life. I don't want to spend time with this little project if it's going to end up a 9 foot plant that I can't keep inside.

Will I actually ever see this thing bear fruit if it's growing in a pot it's whole life?

I doubt anyone can confirm the identity of the plants at this stage but they like water more when they have bigger leaves and are outside. Inside at this size they need little. Just watch they don't dry out.

Truly tiny to Ice cream which plant is it ???.. Your post is somewhat confusing.....

Here are some Truly's in Feb 2016 this year......still look pretty good for being inside for 5 months.

I have found the plant pretty robust in cool weather....however it will show its displeasure by loosing the oldest leaves as winter progresses.

But that is how they roll in my house.

Plant is prolific pupper with minimal needs and a good foliage performer.

Small plants like your are easy to overwater .......keep them on the dry side with as much light as possible.


Use an inexpensive daylight clf for the winter light source or what your budget will allow.
Your plants are small and the requirements will be the same....but next year?
You could do it for 15-25 dollars US.
Google dyi grow lights for bananas for ideas.

Your plants will get bigger next year.
