My humble Canadian attempt
Hello all,
My second summer growing bananas and tropicals on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. We had a cool, rainy summer this year. The temps didn't get very high very often so I was surprised that I had as much growth as I did. I guess I'm just growing for foliage as I'm still learning and not even sure if I could get fruit in these parts. I've learned ALOT this year. Thanks to many of you for information and inspiration . Re: My humble Canadian attempt
I have a very prolific dwarf cavandish that fruits at about the size of your ensete. If you kept it in a large pot like the ensete, I don't see why you couldn't get fruit IF you took it inside somewhere warm during the winter.

Re: My humble Canadian attempt
Your banana selection is similar to mine AND I'm also on Vancouver Island. My Ensete ventricosum 'Maurellii' is in-ground and getting rather large. I want to winter it by cutting back the foliage and using an insulated enclosure.

Re: My humble Canadian attempt
Sunsetsammy,
May I make a suggestion? If and when you get the opportunity, could you post pics of your place in the "member's backyard shots"??? You definitely need to have pics of them for visitors to this board can see your yard and it will be easier to locate in that thread. I just hate to see your pics "fall by the wayside" after a while. Just a suggestion... Your place in awesome... |

Re: My humble Canadian attempt
You don't have to be humble. You have quite the collection there.

Re: My humble Canadian attempt
Very nice.
What type of banana is the one you got growing in the second and third pics that have the red, and purple colors on the leaves? Those are very nice looking. I did not know bananas had colors like that. |

Randy I think I will take your suggestion. Maybe this weekend I'll have some more time to post more pics. Barrie, I would be curious to see/hear about your insulated enclosure that you will be using for your ensete maurelli. Will it be heated? I've read on this forum that these plants will store well (ie. under the house, etc.) Sam |

Re: My humble Canadian attempt
Yes Sam, they do store well although for me, digging this up is beyond what my back will take. I'll post a pic once I have everything constructed. As for heat, I suppose that's an option, even something as simple as a string of old type Xmas lights would be enough to keep the worst cold out (here anyway).
Cheers, Barrie. |
