Default My Home Depot Score

All we needed was a few things from Lowes and they had most of it. We're heading home and I ask my wife, hey does HD still have that big banana plant. She wasn't sure so I U-Turn abruptly to go check it out. We walk in and there it was, a pitiful looking plant about 5' tall with a couple of nice pups. $59.95. Not today I'm thinking. I ask the lady if she wants me to take it off of their hands. If so make me an offer. She says $25 and I bit. I dug the mother of all holes in this heavy clay and I'm dead, but Jean is in the ground.

Somebody please tell me this addiction goes away at some point....

Thanks!! I trimmed it up a bit and I believe it will be ok. Some of roots on top had been exposed for a while and looked a bit rough but we got that giant pot off with everything intact. Loosened it all up a bit and in the hole. Fed it some juice I got from Crazy Banana and let it roll. They claim it to be a dwarf cavendish and I think they're right!

Nice grab! Its funny, my home depot here just got a shipment of plants just like that one.. just in time for the end of growing season?! Same price, 59.99, and some of them have 6 pups or more. I wonder what nursery unloaded their end of seaon stock on HD! Lol.. best of luck with her, she looks great in your yard! Oh, and regarding the addiction, im afraid its terminal.

The name of the nursery is written on the container, I'll check when I get home. It was weird but at first they said they couldn't discount because HD doesn't own the plants. Supposedly on some kind of consignment. She talked to another manager and said OK. I told her to make me an offer and $25 it was. I may have been able to get it for less haha.

Thanks for the good words and verifying that I am terminally addicted...

Looks like Record Buck Farms at least here in Charleston. They appear to be just outside of Orlando. Go offer them $20 for one haha

Hats off to you sir! I bow to your superior bargaining skills.

Plants sold ny Home Depot are PBS -- Pay by scan. So Home Depot doesn't own them, the nursery does... there may ne exceptions, but this is generally true.

This is why when late summer comes around, all herbs and veggies (Bonnie Plants where I live) and thrown in the trash compactor. They aren't discounted to clearance, because discounting costs the store money. So they go from full price to trash. In my not so humble opinion this is retail at its worst (same thing happens to Xmas lights.... perfectly good Xmas lights going straight to landfill... makes my blood boil!)

The store gets X dollars a week for markdown. The goal is to use it but not go over. So have some 3 year old special order decking returns sitting in overhead? Mark it down & throw it out. Have a customer who wants to buy a banana that's been sitting around for awhile, but at a discount? Well every associate is empowered to make the sale up to a certain dollar... find the right person on the right day and they just might take care of you :-)

Now Lowes on the other hand, they must have a different sales relationship with their plant people... because I see them clearance ugly/failing $20 plants for $3... or end of season clearances. I bought two majesty palms for $3 in May that looked like customer returns. After some TLC they look great! Also have a Ficus alii that I bought ten yeara ago from Lowe's for $5 Fall clearance... doing well, as is the scion I grew 6 uears ago.

Anyhow, all this to say, WELL DONE on getting a discount on your banana!!!! :-)

Thank you! I love that I may have saved it from the compactor. It really looked sad and lonely. It has a nice home now.

The addiction ends when your wife emphatically says "You have enough bananas already!!!" At least that's how it worked for me. So I went and bought a papaya. ($9.98 at Lowe's)

Just a few minutes south of you in Jensen Beach.

Near Jensen Ale house....a local sports bar with 30 big screens
and awesome Osso buco and some darn cold beer.

Very true. 15 gallon pots they are.

Update: My HD score, hereinafter referred to as Jean, is doing quite well. Pushed out a large healthy leaf and another on the way. 2 new pups and the 2 that were growing when I planted on Labor Day are really taking off. Not really wanting to separate anything just yet. $25 well spent.
