Sounds like a good breed; I do take the term "cold hardy" with a grain of salt.. my first plants one was "cold hardy" breed, while the other was not.. come winter guess which one died.. the cold hardy one.

It was a Red Dacca, while my other ones started with 4 (have 10 now) are lady fingers. I am in Australian Zone 3 which temp wise is the same as zone 8 in USA.

I guess the difference was the Red Dacca was probably had just recently been brought in from another higher temp zone while the lady finger i have have been growing in my nans garden for the last 38 years.

Apart from its stunning appearance, i got the red because the id tag said it was cold hardy and the nursery staff assured me would have no issues growing.

It died at the slightest touch of cold weather in the first few weeks of winter. On either side of it i had the lady fingers all in the same pots.

I cant find another red at the moment, but when i do get another one ill treat it better than my others.

Hi! I think the red dacca is not cold hady, but i'm just starting on banana stuff... It's very sad when we loose a plant like those. We make a huge effort to get them and then they die... very sad! But we learn with errors.

I'm glad your ladies survived. Yesterday I pruned "nipped" leaves from most of mine; I left "halves" where possible. Fortunately they're in back and I'm not fanatical about perfect specimens because they sure wouldn't impress folks driving down my quiet street; they look like a deranged barber worked on them. I've had slow growth all winter; now that's it gotten warmer new leaves are pushing up more often.

LOL, yes i think i have a barber spirit too... i don't like to see the dried leaves too and cut them... By the way two more on the way, one dwarf cavendish and one ice-cream banana plants and in the end of the month one dwarf orinoco and a pré-cavendish from Madeira island that descend from the first banana plants that arrive there in 17-18 century. I know... i admit i turn in a banana fanatic...

Regarding this pré-cavendish variety from Madeira island, it was probably the first to be introduced on the Madeira island. It has roughly the same height as the dwarf brazilian but thicker, and this because the clusters are much larger, often passing the 50kg with ease. The clusters are much more compact than the Cavendish, so that often can not stick a finger between the bananas ... Bananas are shorter than Cavendish, but thicker, having the pulp and rind with identical textures to the latter, but is a little sweeter and aromatic that Cavendish ... the origin do not know, but I think it will have been Africa or South America. Many people say it is more resistant to disease than Cavendish.

I used to grow bananas in Illinois and had to bring them in in October and let them out in late April. I found that cutting the top off was ok on the bigger ones and they DO need a little water, even when dormant. You will be able to tell, usually, just be careful.... I said a LITTLE water. (Like a cupful once in January or so and again a week or two before taking them out) I also learned it made little or no difference by midsummer whether you let them go dormant or kept them in sun and watered them more during winter.

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.
