My first banana plant!

Hi everybody! I've lurked here for a little bit and bought my first banana plant yesterday, a "Thai Black". Our first frost will probably be here before we know it. I wanted to know what is the best way to take care of this over the winter so I can plant it next spring? The roots have definitely outgrown its pot. Should I repot it now before bringing it in for the winter? I was planning on keeping it in my sunroom over the winter. Open to all tips and advice!

I see you are in the colder zone.Put it inside and keep it warm,but not too warm,room temperature(68F) would be ideal.Ussualy winter days don't have enough light for banana plants,so it's best to keep them cooler.I think many of you will agree with me on this: More light-higher temperature,less light-less heat.You can repot it now,but since it probably won't grow much over winter you can also do it in the spring.The most important thing is that you don't water it too much during winter.If you want your banana plant to grow as vigorously as during summer,you must provide it with additional artificial light and heating,but aslo with high air humidity.I keep mine in a small room in which temperature never drops beyond 77F,I use aditional artificial light and surprisingly they are doing better than outside.

If you can't provide good conditions for growth (warm and with plenty of light), don't repot because you run the risk of roots staying too wet and rotting. If you can, then pot up.

Check out some of the overwintering threads in these forums----good reads.
Keep in mind that everything S L O W S down in the winter.
Also for some reason it is human nature to overwater everything in the winter.

Beautiful plant, Welcome, they can become an addiction. You have been given good advice, I would wait until Spring also to transplant. Enjoy!

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I would assume since it probably won't be growing much that it would be unwise to use any kind of fertilizer over the winter?

Yes unwise !!!
Pull back on everything except light and warmth.
