my crazy ice cream banana size update-it thnks it's a saba!
The trunk of the main plant is 7 feet tall, not counting any leaves. I measured from the ground to where the new leaf was spiraling out. That was as high as I could reach in the wind with the tape measure anyway. The leaves are adding another 4-5 feet of height to it.
The pups (2 of them) are 44 inches tall to where the new leaf is coming out of the trunk. One more pup is about 36" of pstem height. There are two new pups coming out from the base of the old pups. Those pups are about 18 inches tall. The diameter of the main trunk is 18 inches around, and I measured that 16 inches from the ground because of the begonias and etc I underplanted it with! I didn't want to break anything off because it's looking pretty good now. It's sticking over the roof of the garage now and it's catching a lot of wind. So the new leaf is already getting broken since it's windy today. And the broken leaf I just trimmed off of it was 5 feet 8 inches long! I'm going to put some new pictures of it in the gallery. It's crazy big.

Sandy - it must be the year for ice creams!! Mine is 30 inches around the trunk taken 12 inches from the ground - too many pups to get lower, and 10 ft to where the new leaves are unfurling. This is the small pup I had from Jarred in October 2007. It has just taken off and surely there must be a flower soon.

Re: my crazy ice cream banana size update-it thnks it's a saba!
Wow, I sure hope mine doesn't get to be 30 inches around!
My dad does have a skid loader we could use to move it though....lol.... I'm thinking that I'll need to lay it kind of diagonal with kind of a sling from the basket purlins on the greenhouse this year for winter. I really wish now that I had cut it back last year, but it was about 8.5 feet last fall and since I didn't know really how big it could get, I was scared to. I really thought since it's starting it's third summer that it would be blooming by now. I noticed today though, the new leaf appears to be the same size as the rest, almost 6 feet long. So no sign of a flag yet. I'm giving it banana fertilizer(tropical foliage special) in the summer, 24-6-18 @200-400 ppm, and 20-10-20 dark weather special @ 50-100 ppm in the winter. The pictures are in my gallery now.

Is that in the ground? From the picture it looks like it is in a planter. Either way great job on a hugh banana.

Re: my crazy ice cream banana size update-it thnks it's a saba!
Looks to me like you have 10ft, right about where that new leaf is growing out from. The canopy probably adds another 3ft or more, so your right on target for ice cream. That next generation pup on the right is going to be one big musa! Congrats! Can't wait to see it fruit.
I'm using a similar 24-8-16 ratio, and wondered if it was ok. Guess I know for sure now |
