Hi all,
One of my Cal. Gold starts flowering. The level where the fruits bear is less than 1m above the soil. Very easy to handle the pot. And the red color of the back of the bracts is very beautiful and cool. The only fact that I am not satisfied with is the number of the fruits. The first and second hand each consists of 8 fingers that I think very few. I cannot recognize at the present stage how many fingers are contained in the third hand and forth. Is this banana not prolific? |

Hello Richard,
The banana is in a pot of 60Lit(abt16.8gal). Is it too small to harvest the full numbers of banana finger? |

I would thing that's a pretty small pot to expect very many fingers. Good job getting it to flower, though! Can't you grow them in the ground?

For Musas and many other large-fruited genera of plants, the volume of roots dictates the volume of fruit produced.

Looks great!
Sorry I know this is a little off-topic, but I'd like to know where I could get the "REAL" CA Gold. I've purchased it twice, only to discover that it ended up being Orinoco or something I couldn't figure out. A shame, really.. Here I live in SoCal... you'd think that I could easily find it. Any solid leads? (Please PM me) Thanks anyone who could help ![]()

Hello all,
Untill this day, I haven't received any answer to my question if this banana is genetically unproductive or if my case is exceptional. In my case, this banana produces very small numbers of fingers. Thanks in advance. |

Good Question, At this point I do not know for sure. Yours flowed in a pot, so I would expect a smaller harvest. How ever looking at other pictures of Cal. Gold it does seem like they have a small harvest. I would need to see more pictures of Cal. Gold in different areas before I would be willing to say yes or no.

Unless I am missing something the C.G. is very similar to Orinoco. Most Orinoco I've see do not produce large numbers of fingers.
There are quite a few comments from others in that 2006 thread from Mike V. and Joe real who shared their growing experiences and felt California Gold was different than the typical Dwarf Orinoco. As Gabe wrote above, he believes if there are any differences between California Gold and Dwarf Orinoco it's that California Gold might hardier/faster sport |
