Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Update!
Mat #1 of tall Namwa has taken off since harvest! This was the same pup in July! Another shot of the pup October 2020: New bunch of tall Namwa on mat #2 coming along nicely! Over the property line again. That makes six bunches over, and only one stayed on my side. Some luck. Pretty sweet eye candy! Update on new varieties! L/R: FHIA-2 Mona Lisa, Ae Ae, SH 3640, and PR Morado! FHIA-2 Mona Lisa: Ae Ae! Several streaks of white visible: SH 3640: PR Morado: |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Okay.... potted up the Ae Ae. Can’t believe the roots!
You can also see some spider mite damage on underside of leaves.... And of course, it is crooked |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Update!
SH 3640 looking really good as are all of the new acquisitions! Tall Namwa bunch filling, should ripen soon! Dwarf Cavendish blooming! Flag(s) are out! The leaf that was rolled up in the above image contained this! That proceeded to open...... Then to this! Classic streaked bud: New tall Namwa bunch probably isn’t going to be as big as hoped: |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Update!
My tall namwa came through and made a nice ten-hand bunch! Dwarf Cavendish bud coming our slowly! FHIA-3 Sweetheart is probably my favorite banana tree to look at right now! can’t really tell but that thing has a thick trunk! I really wish we had the neighbors yard behind us. We could fit probably 50 banana varieties there! And they are just mowing it how pathetic That’s all folks! Thanks for looking! |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Joe,
I also want to know how tall your dwarf Cavendish got? I have one and want to know what to expect. I have read that they normally get 6 to 8 ft tall and mine is around 5 ft |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Sorry everyone! All of my email notifications went to my spam mail so I wasn’t notified!
subsonicdrone- it will! FHIA-03 Sweetheart is an absolute beast! I bet you have seen Hector’s (HMelendez) Sweetheart base and trunk! Huge maesy- it is about four feet p-stem height. Very short! I noticed mine bloomed when pups were about two feet tall. LaBananaGrwr2018- There are two types of cavendish- there is a dwarf and tall cavendish. Maybe dwarf cavendish gets taller as the mat matures. Hope that answered your questions! |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Update!
Dwarf Cavendish came through and made a seven hand bunch! Woohoo! Probably a hundred bananas! Site was down so couldn’t update the thread! So here isn’t a whole string of photos: Tall Namwa bunch made a nice ten hand bunch! I deflowered the nana fingers and cut the bell. Both tall Namwa bunches visible: Manzano (Apple banana) growing well after transplanting to the ground! Tall Namwa on left and Orinoco on right, Manzano in the middle: The Virupakshi (Hill Banana) looking great! I need to open up the canopy the let in more sunlight though: Orinoco (Burro banana) looking good! Waiting for the flower, should be soon! Woohoo! Too many bananas! The base: Mother and pup: Dwarf Namwa should flower soon as well! Woohoo! Whew, that was a lot of links! Lol |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
They look amamng. I started collecting banana plants cause I wanted to eat different varieties. At the beginning, I mainly was only wanting to collect 3 varieties(blue java, namwah and Mona Lisa(FHIA-02)). I keep seeing your plants and am hoping to be able to get others now. Keep up the great work.

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Joe,
Hope you don't mind me asking but how big does your tall namwa get? What I mean is, how tall do they normally get before flowering? Looking for avg. Just trying to gather information of different banana varieties that interest me. |

Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020
Looks great in your yard Joe! If you plant your nanas right on the neighbors fence line.. the pups will likely pop up on his side and you can force him into a plantation!
As far as the question about tall namwah.. I have some first year namwah that are approaching 13/14 ft of pstem, and havent flowered yet. They are close I believe, as they are crowning and the top of the pstem looks swollen. Joe, your namwah look at least that big if not larger? |

My Tall Namwa get around 12-13 feet tall..... I have one that is about that and has not flowered..... The base is over a foot in diameter. Greenie, who came today, was impressed by the girth. |

Haha! Wow! That is huge. Hope they don't flower if you get a frost...... They need to wait till next spring or you may end up with a naked bloom..... No leaves, the plant can't ripen the bananas. Good lick , keep us posted! |
