Default My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020

Hello everyone, I have been wanting to make a constant-update type thread for awhile now, so here it is!

Just planted another section in my yard. Front to back: Raja puri, dwarf red?, dwarf cavendish, and a super dwarf.

My Tall Namwa mat just sent out a BEAST! This pup is huge! About a foot and a half away from the mother, with a caliper of three to four inches! Definitely not a water sucker lol

I broke the top off it and it grew half an inch in fifteen minutes!

Joy Re: My Backyard Nana Plants, 2020

Updates on everything!

The beast is growing well:

The raja puri has two pups:

And the 1000 finger has one:

I finally got around to planting sweetheart, double cavendish, and California gold:

These areas are doing REALLY good!!! Front to back: double cavendish, raja puri, dwarf red?, dwarf cavendish w/ three pups, and super dwarf.

Left side, front to back: Orinoco, 1000 finger, dwarf Brazilian.
Right side, front to back: tall Namwa, Pisang Ceylon, and dwarf namwa.
On the far right you can see the sweetheart. I will be probably planting two more plants there to finish the row.

Check out the beautiful p- stem on this mystery banana:

And the best for last: the tall Namwa bunches are maturing slowly but surely:

Thanks for looking!!!!

Fantastic! Great collection of banana plants.

BBJ, what's that vine-like plant you are growing under the canopy? Squash of some sort or watermelon? Will it grow after the canopy fills out (more shade)?

Thanks!

That is a calabaza squash (also pictured in pic #3 and #8) I am growing it as a ground cover (annual) till it eventually dies. By that time the cassava and other things growing there will take over.

Is the Tall Namwah fruit different than the Dwarf Variety? How tall does the Tall Namwah get?

I am not sure.... Never had the dwarf. The first tall namwa bunch is generally twelve feet @ the p-stem. The second tree is a little taller when it fruits. They can get pretty tall.....

I like tall banana trees! I'm already growing a dwarf from TC and if the fruit is any different it would give me an excuse to get one!

The only difference that I have heard in regards to fruit as I recall is that the tall namwa fruit is suppose to be "cleaner" whatever that means (fewer blemishes, dings, odd shapes, maybe?) and less chance of getting a corky center. I have encountered some corkiness in my bananas (tall nawmwas) but its a pretty rare thing like 1 in 250 bananas for me. Flavorwise and individual finger size they are suppose to be the same.
