Very cool! How much sun are they getting?

Re: my aeae bananas with fruit

I would say partial sun. I was pretty amazed how in less than a week the hands quickly appeared. I can send you some fruit if you want once its ripe (just pay for the shipping).

Jeff how old is your plant and how tall is it ? If the banana's had seeds you would make a fortune. This plant is very rare in the uk and much sought after you don't know how lucky you are.

Looks very nice. What percentage of new pups show variagation? What is the pH of your soil? I have heard somewhere that pH plays an important role in variagation...

What do those bananas taste like? Dessert or plantain?

Re: my aeae bananas with fruit

Mark it's one year old. I didnt get to try the fruit last year because the stalk was blown down by a hurricane. The plant is about 14 feet tall and all the pups show variegation.

I believe ae ae fruit is a desert banana.

Congrats, Jeff!
Pictures don't do that plant justice, though.
It's even more beautiful in person ;)
I'm almost ready to drive back over there to see it again, now with fruit :)

Re: my aeae bananas with fruit

Jeff, thank you for posting those great pictures. Yes they do make a good dessert banana. But you can use them as a plantain. The tostitos are great and if you can slice them thin they will make chips that will be the best that you have ever had. We even made something that looked and tasted like a potato pancake. Using the Ae Ae as a plantain puts it above any other plantain for taste that I have ever tasted. Using it as a dessert banana it is good but there are better tasting bananas.

I noticed that you plants have more green then mine. Sometimes I use potassium nitrate to increase the percentage of green.

JNS, so you would say they are more like an orinoco, best used as a plantain rather than a desert banana?

The Ae Ae is both plantain and desert banana. There other bananas that fall into the category. The Hua Moa is in that group. It works both ways but not as good as the Ae Ae. I wouldn't consider eating an orinoco, because I am spoiled by the Ae Ae. I know of no plantain that is as good as the Ae Ae but I know some desert bananas that are a little better. When ripe, the fruit is rather fat. Wait until the green parts of the skin start to turn yellow. At that point I harvest the top most hand. To get the best out of it as a desert banana it should be dead ripe. I makes super Bananas Foster. Believe me we eat it in all sorts of ways.

I'm in California. Can you ship fruit here?

jeffreyp 10-16-2006 06:42 AM

Re: my aeae bananas with fruit

It might be ok to ship the fruit. I'll check with the dpa, if there's a problem I can probably get certified to ship fruit.

Jeffreyp,

Did your Ae Ae bloom at 14' of pseudostem or 14' total height. I had 2 mats of Ae Ae until Rita disposed of the oldest one which had been in the ground 2 years and had 4 pups. It was probably going to reach maturity this summer. My other Ae ae is much smaller but does have 3 pups. It should bloom next summer.

do you not worry that it would take all of the white out and turn it plain green.
Here in the uk we are advised to give it acidic compost and a acid feed to help bring out the white variagation also to keep it out of full sun to aviod scorch a bit like canna Stuttgart.

Re: my aeae bananas with fruit

In all of the years that I have grown the Ae Ae I have had less then 3% of the pups that were all white. I have never had a green pup and a normal pup will remain variegated. But about 5 years I had a strange pup that had leaves that had variegation of dark green and white with little mixing and no light green (I'm trying to find the pics). When it produced one all green leaf, I through it out.
Go to my site and scroll down and check out the ones that have red script, they will give you some answers. Note the size of the fruit stalk that was all produced from plants in full sun

It's probably around 14' of pseudostem.

I've used quite a bit of plain ol grass fertilizer so that probably accounts for more green than white in the leaves. It is planted with a mix of good organic topsoil and pine bark. I presume the soil leans more to the acidic side because of the pine bark. If I noticed the variegation disappearing i'd probably amend the soil with sulfur.

Re: my aeae bananas with fruit

Jeffreyp,

Miracid water soluble fertilizer acidifies the soil as well. I have been using that fertilizer along with composted chicken manure top dressed with pine bark mulch with excellent results for the 3 years I've been growing the aeae.

Jeff, where in Boynton are you? East or west? I am in Hollywood so I have never had a freeze problem with my Aes. Do you ever get any freeze there? By the way they look awesome

The stripes on the fruit aren't as clean as Ae Ae, hopefully my Ae Ae should fruit next year for comparison. My first variegated bananas. Over a year and a half in the making. Variegated leaves occasionally going back and forth from white and yellow, depending on how she feels. At this time, its yellow. It's a Namwah variety.

Eggo, NICE!! That must be some sight in person!

Me too, I would love a pup if you ever have the willingness or need to sell some.

Re: my aeae bananas with fruit

Thanks for the interest guys. In person there is lots of red on the fruit stems that doesn’t quite get captured with a photo.
Unfortunately I am not selling any and I don't really have plans for selling. I do trade. Occasionally I will have pups but have traded these for other variegates and will be trading them in the future for other variegates also. Keep me in mind if you ever have a unique variegated banana.
