I think With your knowledge, wisdom, and love for the Ae Ae banana, this opportunity will help others value, understand, and appreciate this rare and unselfish beauty.

That awesome! When the time comes to find a grower willing to participate in Southern California I'd be willing to try.

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

Hi,

Great concept - it's just too bad that you can't streeeeetch the border up a tad to southern Palm Beach Co.

I lived in Pembroke Pines but moved to Lake Worth about 2 1/2 years ago. I had a large Ae-Ae in fruit when I moved and brought it with me. The corm produced quite a few pups that I sold to several list members to get other types of bananas for my new yard. I kept several nice Ae-Ae pups for myself but between a careless lawn guy and Hurricane Wilma, I'm down to one little pup in a pot.

I'd love to help you out if you are so inclined but if not, best of luck and I do hope we can get a lot more of these out and about. I know of several nurseries that have them but I can't bring myself to pay their prices.

Take care - Terry

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

Jordan,
This will be interesting to watch. Hope yall can make them cheaper to get over here. I know itll take a long time though, being that the focus is on the west coast still (for proper conditions). They have to be taken in here in winter everwhere on the east coast, except Florida and maybe Georgia.

Anyone on this coast have a mat of AeAe that they could do this same thing with? It'd speed it up.

Anyways, I cant wait to see what happens. Keep me posted.

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

jnstropic,

Sounds like an awesome idea. I've always thought that we banana lovers should somehow band together and do this very thing! I'm a professional horticulturist who has successfully grown the Ae-Ae before when I worked at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. It grew like a weed for us there and pupped profusely! One of my former co-workers there tells me they unfortunaely lost all of theirs a couple of winters ago.

I am currently living in the Houston, TX area with a climate very similar to Florida (maybe not Southern FL but still plenty humid!). Our typical winter here is about 30 degrees for the low occasionally. I had an Ae-Ae overwinter in the ground here in 2004. I'd love to try some here again if you decide to expand your area of experimentation. I have never been able to bring myself to pay the ridiculous prices that some places sell theirs for and completely agree that we ought to share these wonderful plants if we can or at least if we do sell them, it should be at a reasonable price.

Please let me know if you think my climate is suitable for this worthy project. If not, I wish you great success and hope to be one of the beneficiaries of this project down the line. I truly believe that one day this plant will be more readily available.

Im sorry Ive been misspelling your name this entire time. I just learned how to spell it right. I will correct myself from now on. I hope you don't take it personally. It happens to me all the time (Tyler,Tayler, even Talor!???)

WOW I just re-read this and I feel like a total numb nut. Jordon is on the east coast. Haha I feel stupid.

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

I just added two drawings to: http://togofcoralgables.com/MyAeAesBrother.aspx

The Florida pup has less to start with and that is one reason that the plant is hard to start. As soon as the second and third pups start to grow we will distribute our first class of Ae Aes.

If you want to be in line for these plants go to: http://togofcoralgables.com/contactus.aspx and register

You will receive information of what your responsibility is and how you will be expected to give pups of your Ae Ae to the next in line.

Thanks Brent!
And thank YOU, Jordon!

Glad to be a part of this and actually I'm glad to have won the drawing to be the first winner, there were other local members that are taking part and they get the next ones (It shouldn't be too long of a wait :) )

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

... oh and by the way, it certainly was one big plant! It took up the entire length of the SUV, and blocked some of the view through the windshield, but I made it home safely! Biggest pup I ever got from someone and it's an Ae Ae! I'm elated!

Taylor 08-11-2007 10:15 PM

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

Hi everyone.
I understand this, but at the same time I am confused. (Congrats!!!!) Jarred got the pup, and now what does he do with it? :2789: Then what happens with the pups from Jarreds? Do they slowly move west? Or farther north?(to zone 8 north!) Just kidding. Will 1 pup from Jarred or Jordons go to Cali?

Thanks for the explanation. I just made myself even more confused than I was when I started writing this.

Taylor

jnstropic 08-12-2007 06:25 PM

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

Now Jarred will bring back his first two pups established in pots. I will give them to some growers in south Florida. Jarred can then give later pups away or sell them. If he loses his plant he can back to me and get another pup, only if he had given two back to me and not sold any. Thus if every one in the group gives them freely, they will remain in the group and be assured of being able to get another pup if needed. Many people who get an Ae Ae are successful for up to three years and then fail. Even old timers lose them. Hurricanes seem to be the most common reason for loss. Two years ago a hurricane nearly took out mine. It feels good that I could get one from Jarred. The bigger the group the more the security.

At this point giving an established plant is the only sure way of getting an Ae Ae. That means driving to a location. Would you drive to south Florida and then bring back the first two pups? It is more likely for a grower in Browerd to give someone in Martin county a pup. As this program grows, we will cover a larger area.

Florida grown pups do not ship well. The drawing in (http://togofcoralgables.com/MyAeAesBrother.aspx) shows the small amount rhizome in a typical Florida pup. This is why I establish a pup. Notice I have two pups in pots and one in the ground. They have not grown since they were removed from the mother plant. I will post pictures as they start to grow.

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

Jordon,

I have been nurturing my first Ae Ae that I bought as a 12 inch pup 3 months ago. Recently found that thru overwatering it had stopped growing. Not all my fault, for we in St Lucie County have been getting rain on a regular basis after 2 years of hardly anything. Repotted it in pure peatmoss with some pearlite added for drainage on a tip from Jon in SanDiego. It's growing again just fine.

I feel that the way to go is just as you have said -- grow those pups and spread the wealth throughout the banana enthusiast community. Everyone will always have backup in case of unforseen disaster. I have spent some time developing a regimen and a proper plant site for my Ae Ae and it's pup development. Can't wait till it is large enough and the temperature drops a bit.

Please consider those of us just north of you in Palm Beach, Martin and St Lucie counties as we are very ready to continue your good work.

Five weeks ago I harvested 3 pups. Three days ago I saw growth on one and today all are showing growth. I planted one in my yard and two are in pots. That means that two more Ae Ae's are ready to distribute. Pablo and Sean let me know by email when you want to pick them up.

Hi every one, I'm new to trying to grow bananas, but have been reading all I can, I think the Ae Ae is absolutly the most beautiful banana plant I have ever seen, almost bought one on Ebay, But alas, to expensive and I don't have the expertise or the zone (5) to properly grow one, but I think what you folks are doing is absolutly fantastic. Please keep up the great work, congratulations Media, that pup you have looks like it might be a Rottweiler.Good Ole Big'un, Thank you all, as I have learned so much from all of the members on this forum. Just to let you all know what is going on with the 'My Ae Ae's Brother' here are some pictures. This season I was only able to give out 2 pups. I wanted more pups for next year and have them earlier. This is the reason I cut the flowers. Go to the site and see what else is going on.

Cut on July 6 08

Cut on Oct. 5 08

Cut on Oct. 26 08

Thanks for the update. It's cool watching everyone take home their new Ae-Ae. Some very lucky folks in Florida. Once we move there, this is definitely one of the first new bananas to grow on the list.

You can grow them in SC, its just more work.

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

Wow, Jordon, that's great of you sacrificing all of your fruit to grow more pups to give away. Warren sent me a photo of his Ae Ae last week and it's doing well (I had put him touch with you). It will be exciting to see how all of these Ae Ae do over the next 2-3 years. Maybe one day Ae Ae will be a common sight in south Florida!

I've got a tiny pup on my potted greenhouse Ae Ae right now and will try to take a picture soon and post it. Thanks for your helpful advice in the past.

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

You can grow and fruit them in south Louisiana. Harvested 42 fingers from mine late this summer.

I'd be so worried about digging it up each year, I'd be tempted to leave the poor thing in a pot (like my Kaua`i banana). I can't bring myself to risk the thing just yet - not until I have a pup for insurance.

Maybe once I've experimented more with various types of musa I'll feel more comfortable handling it in my zone. I practically quadrupled the types of banana varieties I was growing last falls, so next spring I'm going to see just how good a banana 'farmer' I really am, LOL.

Chris and Chris now have the 11th Ae Ae pup in the last two months. This season there was only one pup smaller than this one. Most went home in trucks.

Re: My Ae Ae's Brother

2007 I gave out 3 pups - only 1 lived to have fruit.
2008 I gave out 2 pups - no one sent me any pictures.
2009 I gave out 3 pups and only one sent me a picture.
2010 I gave out 13 pups. I gave pups to the 3 botanical gardens and I have pictures of 2 of them.
This year all pups will be given to people in walking distance of my house. And the people have to
plant the Ae Ae banana in spots that can be seen from the side walk. In this way I might see them.

Photobucket

This season 6 plants bloomed but I only let 4 produce fruit. Now this is the last one and if
any one wants some of the fruit please write me and I will give you a time (No I well not
mail the bananas, they are too ripe). I think the cold weather made the bunch ripen all at
once. The bunch in December gave us 4 weeks of ripe bananas.
