Default My Ae Ae Banana

because everyone seems to be so interested in Ae Ae's, I thought I would show the history of mine.
I got a very good sized pup from a very good gardening friend and planted it into the greenhouse (pic 1). It grew to an ultimate OVERALL height of over 20 feet. The leaves were 6-7 ft long. The crown of the plant was hitting the greenhouse ceiling (it was planted on the slope where the ceiling height was about 14 ft). Leaves were burning where they hit the ***extremely HOT*** Lexan in summer (attic temps in the greenhouse can be 110F), and breaking against the roof. It was visually hard to get a good look at the beautiful leaves. (Pic 2)

So, in very early fall this year, I dug it up and planted it out into the yard. Ihad to take the trunk down to about a 7 ft height and ax the leaves. The plant re-established very quickly, and put out a couple new leaves. Now its winter, and it has one good leaf and getting ready to shoot another. This photo was taken a couple weeks ago when I wrapped the trunk in preparation for a hard freeze that didn't materialize. I fully expect my plant to do well here in the yard with a little winter protection. ALmost ALL of my banana plants lose their leaves in the winter to frost, and I expect Ae Ae will be no different, but as long as the trunk is okay I expect success. (pic 3)

Stunning pix, Lilith!

I see you might have a 'variegated' flu bug too, is that a hoya &/or pepper in the last shot of the greenhouse? Healthy, happy-looking specimans you have - do you have an 'album' of more photos? I love seeing what others have, & how they grow 'em!

(Mamas' got an Ae'Ae Xmas fund going here, makes it real easy for the kids to shop for me! Just can't figure out how to get some more acreage - that's a little out of their shopping leaque, LOL!)

Hi Pithy, glad you like 'em!
I have many many plant photo shots but wouldn't want to bore anyone with them. since they aren't all bananas...my collection is very large and contains more than 1500 different plants. The plants in the photo you are talking about are a variegated Hoya and a variegated Lipstick.
Here are a few other plants/shots from the greenhouse:

I'm sorry, I must be slow, I don't understand...share what? If you mean share my Ae Ae, it impossible to share what you only have one of, and, if I ever DO get pups, the first one goes back to the giver, my friend Steve. After that, it would be whoever made me the most lucrative trade offer for something I don't have that I wish to collect, like perhaps a Potato Chip Palm, or an Anthurium reflexinervium, or a variegated Rhapis excelsa palm, or a Sullivan's Palm. etc etc etc I could list 1000 things I want to collect.

LOL I see! You don;t really want to get me started sharing pics...I take photos of every new palm leaf that comes out, every orchid bloom, and on and on. I used to sell plants on eBay, I don't sell any anymore, but I took literally hundreds of photos to use as stock images. Plus photos of the "actual plant for sale". Now, I am back to being just plain old "Joe collector". I love to trade, but unfortunately am limited to trading with states whose agricultural law requirements I can meet, so that puts a few very plant oriented states out of the running.

Oooooh - I have a Pink Princess Philo, makes a striking plant, yes? The only hoya that I have right now are the Hindu Ropes - one variegated & a green form hanging by it for contrast. The latest addition is an un-named variegated clivia & 2 yellow clivias ... it's a good thing I've given up most of my other habits like smoking, buying clothes, vacations, etc. Collecting can get pricey, sometimes. But there are other plants that aren't expensive that please my soul, as well. (good thing, that!)

And my 'lust list' also includes any & all varieties of variegated Rhapis - I knew I'd find kindred spirits here!

Your photos are not only pretty - they show robust, healthy plants. That demonstrates hard work, attention to detail, & a love for your 'green things' - a harmonious & healthy greenhouse doesn't result any other way. That makes them all the prettier!

Kylie, I think your friend in that photo is making really good use of perspective in photography! Lime Zinger just doesn't get that big...but the dark green Xanthosoma saggitifolia (which may actually be X. robusta here in FL) does...I'll post a pic of my 5'2" daughter standing by one of mine.

Pithy, I love hoyas and have just started collecting them in a serious way. I love philodendrons too. That pink princess is one of 5 that I have, they all came from the same plant which was a bedraggled half dead mess that a friend gave me a few years ago with the statement, "If anyone can resurrect this, I know you can". I cut off all the dead parts and separated the plant into 4 main ones about 6 inches long and a few tiny offshoots and they all took. I gave one to another friend, and now I have 5 large healthy vines between 2-4 ft each in different places in the greenhouse. I sold the smaller ones once they got to a good size. Thank you for the compliments about my greenhouse, I really do try to baby everything in there. The plants may actually get more attention than my family sometimes!
