Re: musella lasiocarpa
I think that's normal. They seem to get on a kick making pups at one time in their life. Removing the pups could make it more likely to flower, but I'm not totally sure about this. To me, it seems like a stressed plant may flower faster. I kept this one in a pot for a year and it sure was pot bound when I planted it. Soon after, this appeared! Man, I was excited! No blooms this year from her pups, but they are fast approaching blooming size. I just need to separate some pups so I can sell them to the fine folks on this board. :)

Nice picture, Austin! Mine hasn't done anything special lately. I put some mulch and some organic fertilizer on it today (6-2-4).

Re: musella lasiocarpa
Kitty, I have never seen any other nana produce as many pups a Musella. They like to grow in a big clump. I guess it's actually a mat but a lil different than what you see from a musa. I prefer to focus on a big "clump" rather than height on this one. When it's packed W/ pups it almost resembles a full Bird of Paradise. If I were you I'd put it in the ground next year. If you protect it well, it will survive. Mine did with ease.-Nate

Re: musella lasiocarpa
nate shes been in the ground since the 1st of may. this is the second round of pups for her. i love the looks of the big p-stem and the babies coming out of it. i was worried cause her leaves have gotten shorter and more compact.

Gotta agree with you on the hardiness factor Austin. Dudes are tough. Kitty, Austin probably knows more about em then me but maybe it is a flower. How old is she?

Re: musella lasiocarpa

Re: musella lasiocarpa
Sam, there will be no doubt when it's really about to flower. Unlike true bananas, you'll start seeing the last few leaves it put out begin to relax and grow more horizontally as the bud begins to emerge and push the last leaves over as the bud swells. Of course, mine bloomed so early, it was just a bare stalk with a bud on top for the most part. It didn't even produce any leaves this spring. Mine has been blooming since very early March. My experience in TX is that it takes about two years to get to blooming size, so it may take yours three. It's hard to say.
