Hi,

Happy New Year 2011

Very hot time in Reunion Island.

My Musella has a very strange behavior !
He comes to bloom, but even very small suckers still blooming with only 2 sheets !
It's the first time I can notice this phenomena !

Ive seen pictures similar to that of flowering pups. How long did it take yours to flower?

with too much stress, most plants attempt to make fruit and seed...thus the flower to set it all off...

Hi Xavier,

you said, that it was very hot on Reunion. Could it be stress from heat/drought?

Many plants have as a survival mechanism of the species the ability to generate premature flowering and seed production, when the survival of the individual plant is threatened. You can observe it quite often in times of unusual drought in plants, and even in weeds, after you have pulled them out, that they put all their remaining resources into producing seeds.

I have no idea, what you can do for bananas, other then providing shade and spray them frequently with water, to cool them down, if excessive heat is indeed the problem.

Good luck!
Olaf

Hi again, Xavier,

on second thought, although situated just south of the equator, I found it very hard to believe, that a small island surrounded by the tempering influence of the Pacific waters can be too hot for bananas. So I looked up your weather. It is for Monday through Friday forecast for daily max. of 84^F and a low down to 69^F. My Musa Basjoo and every self-respecting banana, I have ever met, would love these temperatures. I have seen bananas survive in Egypt at temps. of >50^C (>120^F)

Therefore, I believe we can safely rule out 'heat stroke'. How do other Bananas do in your neighbourhood?

Best,
Olaf

Good mornig or good evening everybody,

I've not ensete variety !
In the top of the island I know where there are some plants.
I have to go to harvest some seeds.

I just plant a basjoo !

Just to have this variety and make some crosses, because this variety, here, has no interest !

When I went in my garden, yesterday, I've seen more thant 100 banana trees !

Giant Dwarf cavendish, Dward cavendish, brasilian, figue mignone, figue blanche...

Today, I'm going to do some photos and post them !

There's a banana tree alone, in the middle of my little tropical forest !
It seems to be a "figue blanche".

here's a photo :
