Musa zebrina X velutina pics
2 Attachment(s)
Here are some pics of a project i've been working on for the last couple years. I will have enough to release a few this year if there is some interest in the hybrid. It's a cross between Musa zebrina and velutina. It comes out the ground as a bright red stem. I will take some pics of a new pup that is emerging this week as well.

I'm very interested! Put me first on the list for this new hybrid! I love both velutina and zebrina. Any idea as to its cold hardiness?

It has survived in my yard down to 26f without any problems coming back the next year at all. I am posting another pic of one of the pups coming up on one of my larger plants. I waited until I knew I had plenty available to release a few. I had no idea in the beginning that the pups would have such a deep red stem. I have found over the last few years that the red is much more vivid and longer lasting into adulthood by planting it in at least 50 percent shade. In full sun the variegation on the leaves as well as the red on the stems begins to fade.
Below is another pic. |

That red is amazing! Wow!

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Add me to your want list!

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Wow I wasn't really expecting to have a want list and just really thought I would post some pics as i've never put any pics of it out there before. I will keep a log in Excel on my computer for you guys when I divide some out. This year i'm hoping to cross my African Red and Musa siamensis. I have a stand of African Red that have never grown taller than 6 feet in full sun that I think would be great for breeding purposes.

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
That is a very cool plant! Was this a cross with a Musa zebrina as the seed producer and a Musa velutina as the pollen parent? I would guess it is a velutina seed bearer and a zebrina pollen donor? Also put me down for one of these.

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
A good result, I would like to look at him when he will blossom and the fruit will be.

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Add me to the list that looks great!

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Good work. I too am curious which way this cross was performed, technically whichever plant you list first is assumed to be the female, but this guideline is not always followed.
In my experience 'African Red' is sterile both ways, but don't let that stop you from trying, some plants are mostly sterile but will form seed under the right conditions or by chance. I couldn't find any pollen on mine, so it may only be possible as the female. |
Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Very Cool! I'd like to get on that list too! If that one's close to as hardy as Musa velutina, that would be awesome.
Gabe's right...'African Red' is completely sterile. Mine didn't accept pollen or produce it. |
Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
I LOVE the red!!
Amazing & Beautiful!! I am in with Andrei, I can hardly wait to see the flower & fruiting!! If you're sharing, I'd love to be in on one of those beauties too!!! Thank you in advance!! :) ~Cheryl |
Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
The pollen was retrieved from M. zebrina and the seeds were produced on M. velutina. I will get some pics of the bloom this summer. I now have a group growing in a shade area of my yard so I can find out if the red will hold out longer on the leaves with less sun. The leaves are quite shiny and almost have a waxy feel to them when they first appear.

Too bad about 'African red' as it would make a great parent plant. |
Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
An astonishingly beautiful hybrid. Good work, pallie.

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Wow that's awesome, I wouldn't mind some seeds, have you tried any second generation seeds, are they stable? Does it even produce seeds?
|
Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Looks pretty cool. You may as well put us all down for a pup! Shouldn't have opened your mouth, huh?

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
The correct name for this plant would be "M. velutina X M. zebrina". Gabe is right when he said the mother is listed first in all hybrids. That is why I asked. So the correct way to name hybrids is "mother (seed bearer) X father (pollen donor)". It seems to be a minor point but doing the cross the other way could give very different results or in some cases similar, to the eye, results, but with different characteristics below the surface. In any case, that is a beautiful plant and you should be a proud Papa. MORE HYBRIDS! PLEASE.

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Just beautiful! Would never have thought to try only 50% sun with a banana, but makes sense on the coloration issue. My congratulations on a GREAT job!
I see you're inundated with requests, but would appreciate being added to your list of interested parties when and if the time comes that you part with any if you don't mind. Annie |

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
2 new pics posted above, one of my big plants starting to bloom. I will try to get a better pic of the hairs on the bloom that are evident from velutina. Also the other pic is of one of the small pups starting to make leaves (notice the red on the stem).

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
They are BEA-utiful Scott!!
So looking forward to seeing the Full Bloom!!! :) ~Cheryl |
Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Wow...that's really cool! Great pics and well done on the hybrid! I wonder what the flower/fruit look like! I assume it's inedible, but with velutina as a parent it could be very cool-looking. Who knows!?

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Very nice, Scott! Musa velutina is a tricky one to hybridize with, since the basal flowers are hermaphroditic and tend to self-pollinate as soon as the bract folds back. No question about your plant though, LOL! I'm curious though: Did you peel the bract back before it opened and apply the M. zebrina pollen, or wait until the bract opened? Did you remove the M. velutina stamens? I'd like to hear more about the actual procedure that you went through please! Thanks for the pics, amd keep them coming!

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Scott, thanks for the new pictures! I continue to be excited over your creation. I'm with Frank. Please let us know details of your methods. Did I say please put me on your wish list for seeds or a plant? Keep up the good work!

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
If you are keeping a list, please add me. These are beautiful plants!

Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Wow, it is a very intersting new hybrid. If do you have seeds from this hybrid, then please add me, then I will send Helton the seeds to germinate them for me.
And what's with the hybrid Musa basjoo x velutina? Basjoo-Hybrids are the Number One on my wanting list! And Musa sikkimensis x velutina might be also very interesting! Similar to zebrina x velutina, but hardier. Best wishes Joachim |
Re: Musa zebrina X velutina pics
Scott: I'm a little under 4 hours North and West of you. I'm interested.
