Hi I am new to the forum and I would like to know if Musa Tapo sets seed or if its only available from division of pups. If it can be grown from seed is there a site that sells them in the u.s as over here in the uk they are not available.

I would like to obtain a plant of Tapo but again no one seems to have them over here. I have only seen pictures and I wanted three musa Ae Ae, a Variagated basjoo and a Tapo I have two of them now and I am desperate for the last one .

What is a "Musa Tapo"? Species or Cultivar? Never heard of it...

As far as I know Tapo is an AA type cultivar it has mainly red broad foliage with greenish marks sort of a reverse sikkimensis. Koba koba in the uk had one and that is where i first saw one{ that has justcome to me I thought it was in a picture that I had seen it} reading another post if memory serves it looks a lot like Ace of spades . I am supprised that it is unheard of its a striking looking banana.

I see! I googled it, and according to the Royal Horticultural Society it can only be grown under glass in the UK. In other words, probably not the cold hardiest, but it sounds like a beautyful plant probably worth the effort in a greenhouse or conservatory.

Thanks joe the RHS publish a book every month called the Garden and that link was taken from the book that I have kept for a reference guide.

I still can't track down a plant though. I favour the variagated bananas more than the green ones so I am interested in any variagated bananas in either white and green or red and green. I grow sikkimensis and zebrina as well as zan morino and the common dwarf cavendish I have also been given very kindly a young variagated basjoo to go with my Ae Ae. I have a friend who has a variagated rajapuri which is a stunning plant. David constantine of koba koba has a variagated sikkimensis as well so there are some out there I just dont seem to be able to get them.

I found the following short description from the MGIS at INBAP. It is (AA) cultivar as mentioned before, it is from Papua New Guinea, and even though it says its ornamental below, does not mean it is not edible as well, but rather just suggests its nice coloration.

"Notes : type ornemental, plante petite, coloration rouge marquée sur feuilles et FT, chimère, BLS résistant. Origine = Papouasie / Nlle Guinée"
