Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
All hello! At last I have waited flowerings of this banana, I am very glad. It is possible to look at the beginning of growth of this plant here:
Change from the container in ground Musa sikkimensis, Musa basjoo, Musa acuminata ssp I have planted it seeds in 2007. It grew 2 years in a small pot, and then it have replaced in a ground, in greenhouses. In due course from it has appeared whole clump. Height pseudostem about 4,5 meters. And a greenhouse of a botanical garden of 5 meters. I thought to it there will be not enough place. To a roof remains about 0,5 meters. It was necessary to cut off leaves constantly. That for me is not pleasant employment. Here a photo. At me such question. I want to receive seeds of this banana. It needs to be pollinated or it will make it? As I plan to pollinate other kinds. It Musa Ornata, Musa Ornata ' Royal Purple ' and Musa Dwarf Cavendish. What of them are suitable for pollination? All thanks! 08.10.2011

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
Amazing photos! All of those except Dwarf Cavendish make seeds and can be pollinated. Dwarf Cavendish must be propagated either from suckers or by tissue culture.

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
great.. you pollinated the female flowers of sikkimensis with male sikkimensis pollen??
i haven't had any experience with sikkimensis but are you saying.. A). you used pollen taken from male flowers that were produce from the same plant in between its female flower production?? B). you borrowed the pollen from a different sikkimensis plant altogether ?? Last edited by ron_mcb : 10-30-2011 at 08:27 PM. Reason: spelling |

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
Yeah, the flower pretty much comes out of a small leaf called a flag leaf. Banana flowers range in size depending on variety and how well you took care of the plant. I've seen some nice sized flowers and also puny ones. I hear the nectar from the flowers tastes great too.

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
Hello Raul,
Congratulation to the flowing of Sakkimensis in Siberia even if it was done in a green house. This might be a few cases in the place near the Baikal. |

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
Dubroye utra, Andrei,
Your trial to grow in the ground and street was very agressive and interesting although the final result was forecasted before the trial started. I do respect your challenge spirit. Anyway that was cool and beautiful. |

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
All hello! Here there were not so pleasant news. Young fruit of a plant all has frozen from a frost. Through an a bit open window the frost in a greenhouse has got. Here a photo of consequences. But the bud remains viable and continues to grow. Whether has sense to pollinate flowers repeatedly? Interesting your opinion.

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
All hello! Tried to pollinate a flower several times. But fruits aren't fastened any more. Pollination and infructescence is visible is possible only at an initial stage of flowering. I think not to cut yet a plant, and to leave it for possibility of pollination of other kinds. I hope its pollen can pollinate other versions. Other bananas too are ready to flowering.

Re: Musa sikkimensis bloom!!!
Yes you have all male blooms now. You can use them to pollinate other bananas if they still have female blooms. It will keep blooming for a long time, probably at least another month or two. So you still have time.
