Does anyone know if there is a world Plant Register covering musa species so that we all have an idea of what is actually/officially a species and what is a cultivar or just a seed/plant marketing ploy?

Kev, the closest thing I can come up with is David Constantine's site, which isn't exactly updated on a regular basis.
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drc/ The other resource is the Wiki here. It isn't by any means done, but it's a start. You could also try Kew. They have checklists on just about everything I think. |

Ya, as far as wild species, Davidʻs is the best Iʻve seen but does not include many of the new species and varieties published in the last few years, and Kewʻs is comprehensive but doesnʻt make much sense to me (for example, they list Musa nana [Dwarf Cavendish] as a valid species while reducing all of the varieties of M. borneensis under a single name, yet keeping all of the M. campestris varieties valid). Basically, if its published, and hasnʻt been reduced or disproved or changed yet, its technically a valid species, but its often hard to locate all of the new papers that come out. If anyone wants papers on a particular species, PM me, I may have them.
