Re: Musa Ornata
The name Musa ornata and supposed cultivars under it are always confused in the trade. The truth is there is only one M. ornata, everything else called M. ornata is either a hybrid of usually unknown origin or a different pure species.
In your case the first one is likely M. laterita, though it also somewhat looks like M. rubra, the way to tell M. laterita and M. rubra apart easily is that the bracts on M. rubra stay on when dry, from you photo we cannot know if the bracts were pulled off or if they fell off naturally. The clue I have as to why it may be M. rubra is that the bud is a wider in M. rubra like in your photo, M. laterita tends to be more slender. The second plant is M. ornata. There is a hybrid called 'Royal Purple' but it is not the plant you have. 'Royal Purple' has dark purple bracts, purple fruit, a purple peduncle and purple rachis. |
