Musa Manzano
Hi,
I just received a Musa Manzano pup(thank You Fernie). It's Huge :) I was just wondering how deep I should plant it? Right now I am planting it in a container that I will keep in the house until spring. I'm planting it in compost. Was also wondering when I should start to water it as well? Eventually when it is big enough and ready to move outdoors I want to plant it in a Half Wine Barrel so that I can better protect it come winter. Will it still pup/bare fruit? Any input anybody has on this would be great. Any help is always Welcome Thank You Les |
Re: Musa Manzano
You should plant the pup at the same depth as it was when it was dug from the ground when Fernie separated it. Sometimes it's harder to tell than others, but the psuedostem should be lighter where it was beneath the soil.
Assuming you moistened the compost before you planted it, you often don't need to water again until it shows some growth, especially since you didn't use perlite. Using perlite helps avoid overly wet soil which is especially important for a plant that is developing roots and not growing much. Depending on how warm and dry your home is, you can probably get by with checking the soil's moisture in a couple of weeks and give a small amount of water if it is a little dry. Until it's growing vigorously, it won't need much water. Many pups are killed by over-watering so just be careful of keeping the soil too wet. You don't want it fully saturated. Good luck! |

Re: Musa Manzano
Hi Fernie,
Yes I got your PM and followed your instruction. The plant is now resting comfortably(I hope). I sent a PM right back to you,as well. Hi harveyc, Thanks for the reply. I got the pup planted and am now waiting for signs of growth. Can this get any more exciting :) I still have another few months before I will even think about placing this outside so have enough time to research the idea of planting it in a half wine barrel. Thank You Les |
Re: Musa Manzano

Common names for varieties of "true" 'Apple' are 'Manzano', 'Silk', 'Silk Fig', 'Amorosa', 'Pisang Rastali'....of course there are more too Common names for varieties of 'Brazilian' ('Hawaiian Apple', including 'Dwarf Brazilian) are 'Pome', 'Prata', 'Prata Ana', 'Prata Santa Catarina' and sometimes 'Ladyfinger' plus more. 'Ladyfinger' is generally a poor name to call any banana because it is applied rather loosely to a variety of different cultivars. That photo of the fruiting plant looks like 'Orinoco' to me as well, which would be synonymous to none of the above unfortunately. The photos of the fruit bunch look like they could be 'Manzano', but picked much to early and are underdeveloped. |
Re: Musa Manzano
