Musa Gran Nain Cross
MUSA GRAN NAIN cross new ** on eBay (end time 30-Jul-09 20:14:55 BST)
I found this on ebay, what do you think it's crossed with? I thought Gran Nain were triploid and so couldn't be crossed. |
Re: Musa Gran Nain Cross
It is probably what is also commonly called 'Sumatrana X', a supposed hybrid between M. acuminata subsp. sumatrana (or maybe zebrina, the taxonomy is not very clear in this area) and 'Gran Nain'. It was performed by William Lessard, he got some seeds from using 'Gran Nain' pollen on the M. acuminata female flowers and ended up getting a plant out of it, an extremely rare occurrence, but possible. Some Cavendish varieties have been known to produce a very small amount of viable haploid pollen. The fact that a banana cultivar may be triploid does not inherently mean it is sterile, there are actually many other reasons for sterility that do not involve ploidly levels at all.
That being said, this plant is reportedly not good for fruit production, but rather just a sturdier ornamental compared to the pure wild M. acuminata ornamental varieties. |
