Musa ' Blue Java ' Some Questions (Newbie)

I purchased some of these ‘Blue Java’ seeds from this seller on etsy : http://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/12910...-blue-java-aka in the past and I was lucky enough to germinate one and have the trees for 2-3 years now. I really like my trees and they send out many pups.

I just wanted to ask the community here a few questions as I'm new to Bananas and don't fully understand everything.

How legit do you think these seeds are? I have asked and he said his supplier is really reliable and he confirms that it is definitely 'Blue Java'.

Would you think these are definitely a blue Java banana ? I have read on google that this type of banana doesn’t produce seeds? What do you all know of this?
Also looking at my plants and some of the images on google the trees don’t look quite the same so it’s made me doubt what they are. I’m not down about it as I have some good banana trees that seem to be pretty hardy, it’s just for my own interest I’d like to know that what I have grown is definitely the Blue Java Banana?

My trees do have a slightly silvery blue pseudostem which makes me think maybe it is. They have definitely been pretty hardy outside all year, with some wrapping in winter. It's just I heard 'Blue Java' was a large tree that didn't produce seed so I'm very confused. Further to this everyone here : http://www.reddit.com/r/BackyardOrch...blue_java_bana... says they don't produce seeds? Also I've watched some youtube videos where they say they don't produce seed. Blue Java's are seedless hybrids? As mentioned a video I watched stated they are really big trees but these are dwarf? I'm only asking and trying to be sure because I have taken some into a public garden I work at and wanted to be sure of what I was labelling the Banana as.

Blue Java is an edible banana with seed in the fruit basically ? Does that mean as grown from seed it probably isn't a 'Blue Java' but an unknown wild variety of Banana or?

Any kind of help or info on this matter , would be really appreciated. Thanks all!:woohoonaner:

Snowball's chance in hell that they are legit. Even if they were seeds from an Ice cream/Blue Java banana (mine have never, ever had seeds in therm), they would still be the result of sexual propagation, and thus something new.

There are so many banana seed scams out there with prices too good to be true. The only way to know is by buying a sucker off a plant with a positive ID, some of the blue java I've are actually tall namwah. so trust the seller also!

in my opinion that seller is probably not legit. idk with 100% certainty but it would be my thoughts. can we have a photo of what the seed produced

Edible bananas don't self pollinate but can produce seeds if pollinated. The most common edible banana in the world is the Cavendish and it does produce seeds. With one of it's seedlings being the FHIA-02 Mona Lisa which is grown by many members on this forum. Obviously the original Blue Java banana plant was grown from seed because at that time there was no Blue Java in existence for a vegetative cutting to be taken from. The Blue Java is in my experience the most female fertile banana cultivar so seeds are very easy to produce and should be widely available but you probably got scammed. I believe if a seller is willing to lie once they are probably willing to lie many times and in their listing they stated the Blue Java - "Self-Fertile: Yes - and that's clearly wrong.

Yes, be careful if you want to buy seeds of Blue Java online at Ebay or in Brazil at Mercado Livre, it will be a scam because Blue Java alias Ice Cream does not produce seeds, you will get Musa velutina, Musa ornata or Musa balbisiana instead of Ice Cream. It is better to buy corms or pups of Blue Java, so you do have better chances to not get scammed. I got two corms of Blue Java in July from Mercado Livre and potted them in. Now they have sprouted and I will plant them out in the next days or weeks in my chácara, here in Brazil is now spring and raining time.

Best wishes
Joachim
