Mekong Giant

It's starting to roll a little bit, to include wanting to take over. It's tight against that fence so I'll control it. Those runners look wild. I'd like to separate some but being me don't want to kill any. I'll gift some, just ask. NOT looking for trades. There's no room at the Inn.

So I'm assuming the weird looking runners/pups will start growing up. When they get big enough do I hack up close to the mother plant or what. It's hard to tell but there's one that's actually a couple of feet away. The closest one is some sort of double headed thing. It's starting to look like Medusa down there.

Surely I can't name it Medusa can I? ehh too late once you're named you're named.

Thanks in advance and hit me up if you want a piece of Medusa.

When the "pup" starts growing straight up, do I separate it close to the mother corm or closer to itself. These are not going to be allowed to go cray cray.

I’ve pulled some Mekong Giant runners up before and they looked crazy. They’ll stick up about 1’ and the rhizome at the bottom will go 90 degrees for about 2’ and snap off without any roots whatsoever. Started hitting them with my lawn mower after that. Lol

It's close to the fence, some may end in in my neighbor's yard.

So let it grow a bit and hack it off halfway to the main? I mean I know how to get rid of them but want to give some away.

That’s what I would do. Last year I had to wait until it got about 4’ tall before I transplanted it to my backyard. It didn’t put out a real leaf until it was that tall. It had a great root system by then. I even split and transplanted it in October last year and it still came back up! Zero winter protection!

My plants this year emerged late.
Basjoos were 3-5 feet before the DWARF mekongs decided to grow.

Mekongs overwintered in the ground are 5-6 feet total
The ones I have in a 12 gal container that was overwintered indoors is 9-10 feet total.
I still have them planted side by side for comparison.
The plant is pretty though but no where near the size of your fellas plants.

Mine just didn't do until it wanted to. I got it from Larry last year, mid summer I guess. It was a great looking specimen. I potted it up and it grew a bit but it got late and I had to bring it in after Thanksgiving. It remained stable until damn near killed on the first warm day of the year. It struggled then I planted it. Boom, and as you can see there's a decent pup up very close to it. Now the runners.

On the other hand my in the ground basjoo looks good, is throwing a few pups but just doesn't want to get tall at all. One pup has overtaken the "mother". Maybe they're dwarfs

They look good though just would have guessed they'd have been taller by now. I got that one from Ted down in Melborne, Green Earth maybe?

I’ve learned that they grow best by the shaded side of my house. It only gets morning sun. I’ve also learned not to plant them close to pavers and/or any other plants, because you’ll think your other plant is pupping, but it’s really just a Mekong. That happened to my Saba right next to it. Here are some pics.

Interesting pics....and plant. I'm glad I got one to play with. I may end up moving it bit it would have to be around front. Maybe I'll find a place and grow a big ole jungle patch and incite the HOA in to writing me a ticket.....

I’d like to see how a Pitu grows on the SC coast. Mine almost grows as fast as Namwa here. It’s insane. My Orinoco grows much slower.

Here it is on April 20. It stayed in that pot for close to 90 days I think, maybe a bit less. Once I planted it it took off pretty good. All of those kids did.

Crap, I thought you had a Pitu. That’s a Patupi. My patupi hasn’t been very robust. Typical AA. Starts to grow once it hits about 4’. Lol. My Veinte Cohol is pre flagging right now and decided to blast off once it hit 4’. It’s 6’ now. Maybe I’ll have ripe nanners by Halloween. I hope the Patupi does good for you. Looks better than mine.

I'm new to nanners, don't know what a Pitu is

It's done well I guess. If my schedule wasn't so whacked out I'd have had it in the ground 45 days earlier. I'm hoping to get pups out of a lot of those TCs before November.

here is a pic of my mekong giant
it barely made it through the winter indoors and struggled in the spring
i just moved it out into the sun this week since it has finally started to grow

edit:
it grew ok during the beginning of their stay indoors over the winter
towards the end of their stay indoors many of my plants start declining a bit but the mekong giant was very unhappy
basjoo are like this for me indoors as well

I mean it's about 6' with a 5' pup. Nothing spectacular but that runner snuck down the fence, around and all up in my avocado tree.

We've had 3 days of good rain no telling what I'm in store for
