Manzano Bloom
 

Third bloom of the year. This time is a Manzano (suspected).

I misplaced the height and circumference of the tree but once I find it I will update.

I got this tree from another local forum member at about 1 1/2 feet. I placed it in the ground last year in February. About 1 year 2 months to flowering. We had a much cooler winter well into February this year which a lot of my trees took some damage.

Looks like a Namwah, based on the purple pedicels and shape of the bloom.

Thank you. That's what I was afraid of and I was trying to find some comparisons. What would help you pin it down more?

Some better photos with better lighting that show the new female fingers/flowers better would help. From what I see in the photos you've posted already, the female fingers have purple pedicels, the emerging bud is shaped like a football, and the petiole canals are mostly closed. If that is accurate, it is almost certainly a Pisang Awak ("Namwah") variety. Looks like one of the tall ones, such as "Ice Cream Namwah" or "Misi Luki Namwah".

Ed,

Perfect post. Great photos. I definitely do not have a Manzano. The flowers are pink purplish. I'm starting to lean to a Namwah. Trying to do some more research.

It's very common for someone to misidentify a Manzano.

Yours looks like something in the Bluggoe subgroup. You probably noticed the purple
pedicels on the female fingers on the top hand has faded in the Apr 27 photo.

A Manzano only has purple pedicels on the bottom side of the female fingers and
it will fade in about 18 hours.

A Namwa has purple pedicels on the female fingers that will last 2 weeks.

These are photos of the same Manzano & Namwa cultivars I sent you last year.
