Real bummer! Hopefully the new plants with shorter seasons will do the trick. Fingers crossed.
You said you live in North Central Fl. Have you tried protecting the Pstem. I have been told by a local gardener (writes a column in the paper) that he simply piles bags of leaves around the Pstem to a height of about six feet and uncovers it in the spring. He says that it will then fruit in early summer and mature before it freezes.

Life - Some assembly required, As is no warranty, Batteries not included, Instructions shipped separately and are frequently wrong!

Kentucky Bourbon - It may not solve the problem but it helps to make it tolerable!

Statistics - Data that analyst twist to support the insane opinions of those that pay them.

Thanks. I did try that and they still seemed to want to flag in August or September anyway. Also, I had major squirrel problems; rascals actually KILLED a couple of plants completely by chewing to the nub every new leaf that tried to come up on my plants. I completely solved the squirrel problem, but still unable to defeat the short-season issue at this point. If we'd ever get a freaky year where it stayed relatively warm and didn't freeze over winter, I'd probably make it.

How tall did you sucessfully protect the Pstem. That seems to be the key. From what I can tell you need about six foot from a pup that started around June of the previous year.

I normally whacked them off about 36" from the ground when frost killed them, then put two frost cloths over the stand. In spring, those things shot right up from the center of the stems and grew at the rate of at least one new leaf a week. I just couldn't get nanners on any of them because they didn't put up flags soon enough, just leaves and height.

The squirrel problem was completely solved by this: Squirrel, mink, rat, and other pests traps

Use sunflower seeds; anything like peanut butter and you'll have it full of ants.

It will be a lot of trouble at first removing the bodies, but eventually it eradicates them all, then you just have to keep it baited because they will travel to new territory from time to time.

But at least now I don't fear my plants being killed and my roof being chewed full of holes!

Default squirrels

We're lucky; our squirrels are much better behaved. The most mischief they get into is planting oak trees all around the yard.

Anybody in the Sacramento area with squirrel problems can feel free to PM me, we do live trapping & relocation.

... and then there are some dandy recipes available for the little critters too.

Now Bob I don't mind trapping and relocating but fixing special recipes for them? I don't know. I'm just not going to do that. That's a little much don't you think? I mean if they are hungry, they will just have to eat some acorns cause I'm not cooking for them!

I have to be careful what I post; can never tell if there might be someone from the "Squirrel Board" lurking about.

My poor sister has had 'em move into her house (in WI) after she took off on her "winter migration" to TX. It's amazing where all she was finding black walnuts!
At least her squirrels had learned how to share their snacks...

My ex had red squirrels between the upstairs floor/downstairs ceiling. I recommend a half dozen mothballs & she went bonkers & dumped in about 3-4 boxes & dang near needed hazmat remediation.
Chased the squirrels out though.
