Talking Look at the Coloring on this Ae Ae !!!!

RARE IRREGULAR variegated banana AE AE 2-3' collectors - eBay (item 300350982034 end time Sep-27-09 18:40:55 PDT)

I think this is too cool!!! But do you think this is reverting back or will to solid green?

I have purchased from this seller before and his plants are excellent. Just thought some of you would like to see this. ~JaNan

what do you think: could the pups of this plant be "regualar" variegated ones?
if yes, it could be worth buying?

Yeah, you can see where the first leaf has turned brown and crispy on that tip. But mine all get brown and crispy along the edges and they are in morning and dappled sun. The white is as it is - in Texas anyway. I just love the dramatic boldness of it, but that's just me. I have seen this type of coloration in the Siam Ruby with a half and half or so and I think it is so striking. But my Rubies or their sister Margaritas don't burn at all like my Ae's do. I do have a Zebrina that burns badly also, yet I have three others that don't. (I have to toughen them all up to live here with me) They just look crappy until the aclimated leaves come out.

Jananas i can relate that first simmer was hell for the poor baby's but they did adapt i don't get that much crispness unless i don't water often enough
However the Ae Ae always has some brown on it they are just vary susceptible what can you do? nothin and yes my SR a MM are good in sun they aways grow like troopers but as iv noted in a few other threads i think SR likes high heat mine don't even grow well until the temps go over 90 at 100 they put a leaf out ever 3 days they are truly heat sucking sun worshipers

PS my avatar is a Siam Ruby its 105deg Fahrenheit and look at it i think a picture is worth a 1000 words!

Paulo your avatar picture is one of the best I have ever seen of Siam Ruby! When I first saw it I immediately had to go to your photo gallery and enlarge it so I could see it better! The color is so vibrant. Mine are all maroon dark red, though they do have some splashes of neon green.

I have to agree with Sandy and Paulo. I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole unless I had tons of money to burn. That's just too much white for a healthy, strong plant. And what good is that much variegation if it always has burn spots? That much green concerns me too.

Just my 2 cents.

you can control how red or green your SR get by adjusting their light exposure its a trial an arror thing i was for ever moving this plant a few inches at a time to more and more shade until i found just the right spot to get the color value i wanted but the older a leaf gets the darker it will be this particular picture was right after a big growth spurt so most of those leafs are vary new its not this good looking now I'm hoping to be the first to get one to bloom just as a curious side note this plant is 3 ft tall 2.5 years old and it has never pupped I'm told that SM pup profusely but i have not had such luck

sorry for the thread recking People

I've got one that is close to the same as that one. The first 4 leaves all had some splotches of white, but the last leaf to open is all green. The P-stem has some nice variegation though! Either way, I don't think I would pay more than $20.00 for a plant like this!

Come on, Brian, I expect to see a Siam Ruby flower from you! Go Brian, Go!

By the way, Tog swore that variegation was all due to nutrition and that variegation would go away with good nutrition. I just don't see that, but he had some experiences along the lines of that. Weird.

Agreed. Ae Ae follows the same registry guidelines that the ICRA/ISHS uses which means that there's a specific % of acceptable variegation and pattern for it to be called Ae Ae. It might be a pup, but when a lateral shoot creates a certain amount of flux in it's chimeras, then it becomes something else (just like MANY others are Sports of another cv.). The registry is set up just for this purpose. I would call this an 'Ae Ae Sport', and not just Ae Ae, for better or worse. There also needs to be a certain amount of chlorophyll to be present, or the foliage cannot photosynthesize, and these leaves will continue to fail, as someone had noted 'crispy'. This will likely result in quite an uneven looking, off-balance adult tree.

Those are old pictures Harvey, I don't even have a Siam Ruby anymore! I gave that plant to a friend almost two years ago, and it is still only about 4-4 1/2' tall. He has it in a semi shaded area and it is growing at a snails pace!
