Liquid VS Slow Release Fertilizers
What is better?
Which do you prefer and why? What N-P-K ratio? When to use the different ratios? |

Re: Liquid VS Slow Release Fertilizers
I prefer slow release pelletized. Our sandy soil leaches nutrients fast so the granular is more persistant.. even so I fertilize weekly. My non fruiting plants get 13/13/13 while my fruit bearing ones get MOP only.

Re: Liquid VS Slow Release Fertilizers
I think I may try some pelletized myself. I already messed up with the liquid. They are doing better now, but still very light green. Leaves are still coming out a bit to fast. The leaves were stacking quick and coming out crinkled. Almost white on the initial dose. Plants were too young and not growing enough for that much juice. :-) I could have got away with 1/2 dose or less. Lesson learned. :-)

Re: Liquid VS Slow Release Fertilizers
In my zone, and yours seems similar, you will need to push the plants hard with fertilizer to establish and ripen fruit on the proper timing schedule. You will see all kinds of signs of overfertilization much worse than what you are seeing. You can always back off a week or two if you dont like what is happening.. the plants will sort themselves out if left alone. During the growing season mine look like a total mess sometimes lol.

Brands are different ....but the ingredients are the same. Buy in the fall when there is a clearance or broken bags at the big box.......for future needs......and it looks like you will need it Buy what you can afford. I see different ratios. Which do you use most and why? At what times do you use the different ratios?

Re: Liquid VS Slow Release Fertilizers
Ull throw my .02 in.. for me it doesnt matter what fert you use.. bananas require certain amounts of NPK to grow, and you can calculate how much to give it based on the percentage of NPK in each blend. For 10-10-10 you would feed slightly more than if using say 13-13-13. When a plant is fruiting, it is common to feed only potassium.. using something like MOP. If you want detailed advice of what to feed, how much and when look at TyTaylors fertilizer sheet on his page. You can adapt it to whatever you have available with some simple math.

Totally agree with you Mike, different zones require different tactics. I have tried many different fertilisers over the years. The only one that works for me in the UK, for complete overall plant health is miracal gro water soluble plant food. NPK 24-8-16 My chances of getting edible fruit is low, so my main aim is keeping the plant alive year round. |

Re: Liquid VS Slow Release Fertilizers
In regards to plant nutrition don't forget grass clippings! i consider them slow release!
I bag my St. Augustine grass clippings and apply as mulch to my patch continously over the summer. This suppresses the weeds and reduces moisture loss to the patch. According to some sources grass clippings have an N-P-K of 4-1-2 plus all kinds of micro elements and over the course of a season (March to October) can return 2 lbs of N per 1,000 square feet of lawn. I use chemical fertilizers too but grass clippings play an important role for outdoor plants. |

Re: Liquid VS Slow Release Fertilizers
My plants grow great but it doesn't really impact my chemical fertilizer program as far as N-P-K is concerned. I consider it bonus N-P-K. I think of the grass clippings as weed suppression, evaporation control, and minor element supplementation. I believe that it provides a different type of N-P-K from a quality standpoint sorta like a slow carb (brown rice) vs. fast carb (white rice) thing.

I did some quick research and most sources say not to pile on too much grass clippings as it can be detrimental to it composting correctly... but these are bananas we're talking about. How much do you stack? As much as you can give?
