Re: Leaves turning yellow from the center?
Bananas do fold leaves it's common. You have pushed the panic button. First thing people tend to do is over water and more food. Problem will end only when we get out of the panic mode. I've been there & done that. Since they are young plants they may need a little shade protection.
Good Luck! :2738: |
Re: Leaves turning yellow from the center?
I'm not super worried about the folding leaves, but the yellowing down the center line actually.
Should I rig some shade for them? They do get a LOT of sun. |

Re: Leaves turning yellow from the center?
I think I'll have to rig tiny tarps out of shade cloth. Umbrella like things end up in the next county here(it's windy at times) and if they didn't fly away, they're 'grow legs' and walk off since my front yard has no fence and I haven't had time to terrify the newest batch of neighbors.
Thank you!! |
Re: Leaves turning yellow from the center?
The flattening of the leaves downward is a natural thing bananas do when they have too much sun. You don't have to do anything to them, they just do this during the day, and come back at night/morning. Nothing to worry about. The yellowing on the second picture may be due to either too much water or too much fertilizer. I'd hold back a bit on both, but don't let it get excessively dry if it's hot/sunny during the day. Bananas can handle a lot of water if it's hot/humid.
If you ask me, I'd say hold off on fertilizer for a bit, but let everything else continue. Sun may cause leaf burn initially when plants are moved out/transplanted into more light then they are used to. They may even get torched/sunburnt and leaves will get fried, but the new foliage will come out adapted to it and will be perfect without need for shade cloth, etc. |
Re: Leaves turning yellow from the center?
Well I did just put the fertilizer on them. They've been out in the full sun the whole time(the pups came up after the freezes). I just think they look unhappy all droopy.
I haven't watered the last couple days because of all the rains, but I'll leave off watering them for a couple days even if it doesn't rain. I guess it makes sense for them to fold the leaves to avoid soaking in extra heat. I just figured the extra sunlight would be good for them. |
