I put my potted Dwarf Cavendish outside today on porch with some sun cover-
Within an hour or two, the newest leaf shoot appears paper soft/weak to touch and is curling.

I'm in Louisville, KY- weather seems right, is this just normal transitioning to being placed outside?

Plant is probably 1.5-2ft tall. I put my potted Truly Tiny next to it, and it seemingly is fine.

If the plant has been dormant for awhile, that leaf inside has somehow gotten white, brittle. One of my tall namwa I dug off the mother just put out the first leaf. It was very white and extremely brittle. Sounds normal to me.

White is an indication of 'lack of nitrogen' on banana plants which are normally green. . I suggest foliar spraying with a nitrogen rich spray. ... Last year, I had a couple of plants that that developed white/spotted leaves. I foliar sprayed (every other day) and could see daily green color improvement. The leaves were fully green in about a week. Pictures were shown in another thread and help to demonstrate the value of foliar spraying.

Grvolp2 .... Light colored or white leaves and thin textured leaves are not normal. This is an indication lack of nutrients. Foliar (mist) spray the plant with Miracle Grow mixed per directions for potted plants.

No white or lack of color here../leaf just lost “crunch” and became “weak” to touch if that makes sense. I said paper thin, I mean almost softness to a tissue, if that makes sense. Which obviously isn’t normal for banana foliage. Didn’t start until plant was moved outside then did it within hours.

Could you perhaps post a photo? A picture is worth a thousand words after all

It does seem like it's adjusting to the outside (and warmer temps?) Also that it's a Cavendish...In my * albiet limited experience* I find this variety to be a bit fussy.

My (indoor) Super Dwarf Cavendish goes into wilt mode when its getting direct sun. Top leaves are fine, but most of the lower ones wilt and become very flimsy. Same as you describe. One of the leaves even gets wavy, and another totally folds in on itself! Then after a few hours of dark it bounces back like nothing happened.

Meanwhile my very small Dwarf Namwah and Zebrina pups have no reaction at all . Sumatrana x Cross(a little over a foot tall) only has a slight reaction.


Hopefully it's as simple as this for your situation. If not, there are plenty of experts here! I'm a Banana novice myself and I've already learned so much just by browsing these forums.

Yes it is! That top leaf curled up and is just soooo soft to touch vs the other leaves.

Also any feedback on the plant in general is appreciated.

The leaves are folded down. This is caused by lack of moisture or heat.


Lack of moisture can be low humidity, root damage or dry potting soil. ... High heat (100+ deg) can be ambient air temp or radiant heat (direct sunlight).


I see some leaf curl usually caused by excessive fertilizer. Excessive fertilizer can also damage the roots and prevent nutrient & water take up to the plant. Please tell us how much, how often, and when was the last time the pot was fertilized?


If you mist the plant a couple of times per day with water, you should see immediate improvement. The leaf curling may take a little longer if it was caused by over fertilizing.

You know what- I bet it’s over fertilization.

I use the plant sticks and have recommended amount in there.
Then I also used jobes citrus granular.
Then I also use N-EXT seaweed kelp and flora green which is 4-0-2.

Thought it was all weaker stuff but together I bet it’s too much.

Do I just avoid fertilizer for a couple weeks and use just water and Epsom salts to flush the chemicals?

Plant your size 2 or 3 Table spoons would be enough for 3 or 4 months and incress as the plant gets bigger. A mature full grown banana plant needs 1 lb nitrogen & 1 1/2 lb of K per year (growing season). So you can calculate the fertilizer amount needed from the NPK.


Just flush the pots with water and let dry out before watering again.
