Re: Last California Gold of the year!!!
Wow, 355 kinds of fruiting plants! Have all of them produced fruit for you ?
I have probably half that of fruiting plants. My yard is almost exclusively landscaped with plants that produce something edible. The plants have to earn their keep! I think this spring I'll have some jackfruit to harvest. Now that would make an interesting wine! Maybe call it captain jack (: If you're also into home brewing, try making up a batch of BUDVAR, it's amazing. Quote:

Re: Last California Gold of the year!!!
These are all multi-grafts, and only have 45 planting holes and some potted plants. Most of them have fruited. I've grafted around 50 cultivars just this year, and 10 of them fruited right away.
What would you know, I happen to have Jackfruit wine! Made it from frozen Jackfruits from Asian stores. I only made 1 gallon which netted out to just 3 bottles. The aroma is not as good as I'd hope, unless I can get me real fresh Jackfruits. |

Re: Last California Gold of the year!!!
I'd send you some, but I think it is probably against california ag rules to ship fresh fruit into the state. The fruits are huge..

Joe, I use stainless steel soda kegs for my wine. It's alot easier than bottling and you can dispense it using a very small amount of co2 and a picnic tap. I have been buying the 2.5 -3 gallon size mini kegs off of ebay like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/3-gal-soda-beer-...QQcmdZViewItem or you use the bigger and cheaper 5 gallon soda kegs.. |

Good obersvation... But.. The question that comes to my many peoples minds is fruit taste. I like it it. ( so does every one I have talked to. As it has already been it reported by Joe Real as in an "un official obeservation" .. he said that for him... CG is cold hardier than m. Basjoo in containers ....MPG may vary! But in my garden... I think the hardiness is about the same. But m. Basjoo gets you a flower but nuttin to eat! CG produces good fruit! To my palate... and my kids... CG tastes great. I love them... my kids love them... What else can I say.... But... GOOD EATS ! Jeff |

Re: Last California Gold of the year!!!
I promised Jarred the first CG pup this year. This is in exchange for the bromeliads he sent me. And this is the thread that has MediaHound and California Gold Keywords in them.

FYI - Jeff Earl's first 2008 Cal Gold pup on eBay I don't know if you've seen this new thread, but Jeff already sold 2 CA Gold on eBay so far. Both of them won by Steve in France. Very, very spendy! I'm sure that he's has more coming this year, since he's had a late start. So, keep an eye on that thread. Anyway, since you're the active member closest to Wichita Falls, TX, I thought I might ask you if you've ever sourced the variety called Texas Star banana, which allegedly hailed from there, according to TyTy Nursery. In the past, I've actually seen side by side comparisons between CA Gold, Texas Star, and D. Orinoco, and they said that the Texas Star had survived below zero weather in upper TX. I really want to know if there are sources other than the TyTy Nursery chain, and especially from Wichita Falls, TX. Is there a way you can find out? Thanks. Chong |

And do some background checking on Ty Ty - they had a Daves Garden Watchdog entry that was from what I remember like 99% negative until Ty Ty sent some lawyers after them and had all references to them removed (they shoulda fought it - Dave woulda won, imho). Fortunately, Amazon apparently has better lawyers - plenty of reviews here to read: Amazon.com: TyTy Nursery: Website Details Not to mention BBB: Columbus, GA: Check Out a Business or Charity And if you do a Google on them you'll find tons of negative reviews about them. So in that respect, ANYTHING that they claim is bogus in my honest opinion. So I've long since written off Texas Star as an option. Be well, Mike |

That was fast. Thank you for your quick response. I completely understand your concern about TTN. I am all too familiar with the blog on the internet. I also know that they have several aliases to mask their company from their reputation. That is why I was wondering if there were any sources in Witchita Falls for the elusive TX Star, where it is alleged to be from. Having said that, I must tell you that I personally have ordered plants from them in the early 90s. And I have to admit that I had a satisfactory transaction with them. And the only reason that I did not order the TX Star then, was the price was pretty steep. The Red Abyssinian bananas I got from them lasted me five winters thru snow and sleet and hail. The fifth year we got incessant rain for 3 months coupled with temps in the high 30s and low 40s. In the following early spring, I noticed one of them was leaning and when I righted it, it just popped out of the soil, and exposed a black mush for a corm. When these 2 arrived from TTN, my wife left them in the trunk of the car, and forgot to tell me until 3 weeks later wherein we had temperatures in the low teens. But after unpacking them, I was pleasantly surprised that they were still red/green, not black. After the demise of the Red Abyssinians, I tried to reorder from them but they declined the order, citing strict WA state laws. But now, their ad on the net does not have WA state as one of the states they cannot ship to. Re: TX Star, I mentioned that I'd seen side by side comparison of it and the CA Gold and D. Orinoco. I do not believe that they were from TTN. It was from another collector. He had the three of them side by side next to a swimming pool. I remember that the mat of the TX Star was wider and the plant itself was slightly taller than the CA Gold and the D. Orinoco. The article noted that the experience occasional snow, frequent frosts and hail. The fruits of the three plants look very much alike. I did not see any photos of the blooms. I wish that I can find that website again. Anyway, my curiosity is still peaked, though I am apprehensive about getting one from TTN. Hence, my question to you in my earlier post for an alternate source. Thanks again. Chong |
